I just wrapped up a 4h session of Joe Banner ‘s Havenshine with a bunch of people new to RPGs, and one who hadn’t played D&D for 18 years.

I will stop by in the next day or so with a complete AP report. Now it is 1am and I am passing the heck out but it was GLORIOUS.

On episode 72 of our AP podcast Virtual Play, my brother Mel and I discuss running sequential versus simultaneous scenes in Dungeon World, comparing Mel’s one-shot game at Dreamation with a local campaign I run at home.

So a question: how do you folks deal with the issue of the actual stuff required for DW?

So a question: how do you folks deal with the issue of the actual stuff required for DW? The character sheets, sheets of multi class and bonus moves, your many resources as the GM, etc? In our past D&D campaigns (mostly 4e) with a friend as the DM, we usually used a digital character sheet he had written, so everyone sat around with laptops and iPads. Are most of you lot running full pen and paper games? How do you organize your materials? Do you use a screen?

SO MANY QUESTIONS!

I have had several DW sessions where players try an emphatic speech when speaking to an NPC, but today, I had my first Oscar Nominated, Almost Moved the GM to Tears, We Heard the Film Score Swelling in the Background honest-to-Glob I will not ask this guy to roll+CHA because it was really that good Appeal to Awesomeness speech.

I wish I had recorded it, but here’s my best recollection of the phrasing as the Elven Ranger spoke to the Grizzled Veteran in the Dying Town:

“Those townsfolk down there are sheep, without direction. You’re the only one here with a scrap of honour. Show them. Build something. Take this money, hire someone to start building boats again, and make this town the great port it should be. Once your ships are built, I will sail with you through the mist to negotiate trade with my people.”

I’ve been running a DW campaign for a few weeks, and last night was session 4.  Up until last night it’s been pretty fun, but last night I decided to try and consciously apply some advice I read (I think somewhere on this board, though I can’t find the post): make harder hard moves, and deal more damage.  In particular, whenever fictionally appropriate, I dealt damage in addition to whatever fictional consequences there were to the failure.

The difference was really palpable.  Tension was higher, and players responded by making more interesting (sometimes desperate) fictional actions.  The declining hit point total made it necessary to move the story forward with every move.

The session ended with the wizard getting her face painted with blood by an orc shaman and taking part in a ritual to become a berserker.  Unexpected, for sure, and I could not have been happier with the outcome.
