The ‘First Session’:

The ‘First Session’:

The ‘First Session’:

We were introduced to three heroes.

The Elven Wizard Illiastre, the Halfling Fighter Bartleby, and the Human Cleric Carmine.  Each had their own reasons for currently residing in Helga’s Glenn.  In any case, a recent flood had exposed a long lost ruin within the side of a bluff up stream from the Glenn.  Nadia, the village wise woman and the true power behind the council of elders, asked for volunteers to explore the ruin and alleviate or deal with what many of the villagers feared would be there.

The villagers feared that it was a hide out of Ole One Eye, an ogre bandit extraordinaire whose crew terrorized the area in days past.  The nearby tower of the Wizards R’hus Order, the same place that trained Illiastre, new it to be home to a doorway sealed for unknown reasons by their founder long ago.

The heroes found themselves facing the ragged openings of the complex from across the still raging creek that had carved it’s way through the scree of the land slide.  Crossing proved… problematic.  The waters moved far swifter than they appeared and the scree below was still loose and very unstable.  Needless to say, the three were thoroughly soaked by the time they reached the secondary opening thirty feet down the way.

As Illiastre assisted in dragging Carmine to the shore with her staff, Bartleby noticed two skeletons come down a set of stairs with bows at the ready.  They stood at the top of a set of rough earthen tiers the party would need to climb to reach the stairway.  Bartleby ready his trusty spear he found years ago in the LeanBriar Forest that stretches the length of the south side of the creek.  He manged to deflect one of the arrows, while the other grazed the wizard’s thigh as she finally got the cleric into the shallows.  Illiastre turned and destroyed one of the undead bowmen with her magic missiles.  Carmine got his feet set under him and called upon his deity, Rah (“Rah, Rah, he’s our god, he’s the sun god, he’s the fun god!  Hurrah!!”), to turn the last skeleton which promptly fled back up the stairs.

In short order, the heroes found the entire complex was over run with undead:  Skeletons, ghouls, and a morgh that had been a one eyed ogre in life.  The morgh and its skeleton guardians stood before a large arched door made of unknown stone.  The door and each stone of the arch surrounding it were covered in magical glyphs and runes that glowed a steady azure hue.

The ensuing fight was short and bloody.  Illiastre hung back taking out the skeleton bowman with her own magic missiles while the Carmine and Bartleby faced off with Ole One Eye the Now Undead.  Carmine spent much of the fight getting in the way of both the fighter and the morgh, managing to do little but annoy both.  Ole One Eye managed to land a few blows on both its adversaries before Bartleby managed to skewer its guts from the front, roll between its legs, and eviscerate the thing with a powerful dancing spin that ended by splitting the back of Ole One Eye’s skull in two.

As Carmine began healing himself and his fellows, he drew Unwanted Attention from the Sealed Doorway.  The group soon found out that it was quite active as the glow of its glyphs and runes flared and the cleric’s skin began to itch and crawl.  The wizard realized that it was the door, in an effort to prevent it being opened, that had turned Ole One Eye and his crew into undead minions that it could command.

The heroes wisely fled the room.  After clearing the last few rooms of undead, they returned to Helga’s Glenn triumphant!

And a good time was had by all ;-}

In today’s Dungeon World session, the heroes chased spider queen cultists through the night-darkened streets of the city to rescue Oomfoofoo, Queen of Beggars. During the pitched final battle against a giant spider and two cult assassins, Romeo, my bard, lost the use of his shield after the giant spider sprayed Romeo with webbing, effectively sticking Romeo’s shield arm to his own chest. Undaunted, Romeo rammed into a cult assassin, sticking the assassin to the webbing as well. Via a series of phenomenal hack-and-slash rolls, the 9-Strength bard then proceeded to headbutt the cult assassin to death. Romeo’s fury at Oomfoofoo’s rough treatment by the assassins knew no bounds. Huzzah.

I started a new campaign Monday night.

I started a new campaign Monday night.

I started a new campaign Monday night.  I went in with the idea of a harpy attack on a PC family dinner which included all the PCs.   I chose this due to a cool harpy image I saw, and feeling that endangering someone’s family would be a cool start.  We ended the session mid fight, since it was late.

My dilemma is… I don’t know the harpies’ motivation yet, and they have felt too passive so far, partially because a PC rolled a 3 when discerning reality and the unwelcome truth was seeing  eight more harpies lurking in the trees watching.

Background:

The character chosen for this family meal is Sauran.  Or one of the lizardfolk.  He has 18-20 family members present, 11 of them kids, only 3 are “combat ready”  The dinner is taking place at the families heritage tree, which is where the family lays it’s eggs. (makes lizardfolk babies)

One of these family members is hated by the druid for summoning up a pack of unnatural demons to devour a competitor earlier that day.  The druid is looking for a way to kill that family member, without alienating the family.

The attack started at the other side of this huge tree, 2 harpies made an unnatural noise that felt like lave inside your brain, and then attacked two “helpless” aunts that were up in the tree,  preparing “ritual dishes and deserts” while everyone else was seated to eat at long tables on the ground.

The action broke up into two sides very quickly.

on the table side of the tree.

The druid took an owl shape and is investigating the harpes above the family.   most of them are ignoring him as an animal, although the druid just attacked a harpy… so this could change.

The thief is hiding under a  table by a child(that is still trying to eat dinner).  The thief is ready to pounce on any harpy that attacks the child.

Most of the family is running around confused.  two of them got out some javelins, but don’t seem to know what to do with them.

The harpies so far have been patiently watching.  (why?)

on the far side of the tree:

both aunts ripped to pieces while still up in the tree.

The gladiator (the lizardfolk player)  the cleric and one brother have killed one of the harpies, and are in battle with the second one.

Questions:

So why did the harpies want the sauren aunts to bleed on the heritage tree?

Why are most of the harpies just watching?  How do I teach the druid that an barn owl is no match for a pack of harpies, and do that lesson in a fun way that allows me to be a fan of the druid?

Should I just ask the players to answer these questions to start out?  or do any of you have cool ideas?

thanks!

Geee, here I am to ask for your help again, a few hours ago I ran a DW game for my Saturday group and I made a hard move on them as a consequence of their attack to a dragon in human form. 2 characters died as a result, but the point is that when the monster spew I forgot to ask them to roll for defy danger. It was a big unjustice (right?) and I want to mend it. What’d the best approach to do this without hurting the fiction of the game? Thanks again.
