My blog post about a new mini-campaign my online D&D group has embarked on (~3 weeks or so). We’re taking a few weeks breather from our campaign, side-stepping into Dungeon World for fun and playing with cliches!

Hey, I’d like to know everything I could need to know about Living Dungeon World. Hamish Cameron– can you help? I’m considering taking over the D&D Encounters program this Fall with a Wednesday Night DW game, but I’d need some way to support multi-table play (we typically get 16-24 players each week).

Anyway, a quick question about spellcasting and rotes/cantrips. Do you really need to roll a Cast a Spell move to cast a rote? It seems harsh to get the same complication for “light” as for “contagion” (for example).

I may be thinking about this the wrong way, in that a simple light spell, cast in the wrong time/way, can complicate things just as much as infecting someone with leprosy. I guess, for me, it’s that the complications for casting a rote are both likely and frustrating– a -1 (making it harder to cast another spell), or losing the spell (or the DM complication, which can be excellent in the hands of a creative DM, or not-so-excellent if your DM runs out of ideas).

So: Do rotes and cantrips require you to roll the Cast a Spell move?

So, how do those of you who adapt modules to DW handle the whole “don’t create fronts and plots yet” part of the game?

I kind of want to run a published adventure (Death in Freeport) using DW, but I’m not sure how to go about it. Suggestions welcomed!
