OK, this might actually happen; my players have found a soul jar and are trying to capture the soul of a dragon lich in it.
It was casually floating around the dungeon, waiting to be resurrected by an out of town lich lord, when the players barged in. Needless to say, they found its skeleton, and they discovered its plan (Charm Person on cultists was really, really hilarious) so the cleric cast Speak with the Dead on it, and discovered how to trap it, and where the soul jar was.
They will probably succeed in this, and the soul jar will probably become a custom magic item. The thing is; what should it do? I have some ideas, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on this đ
The dragon soul should press the players to reunite the soul jar with its phylactery. Then have them attempt a complex ritual to resurrect the dracolich. Meanwhile, the players will benefit the dracolich soul powers and counsels in order to have them believe it is their friend…
Tapping into its knowledge would be kind of awesome.
…with strings attached, would be even more awesome! đ
Yes, definitely create a big negative to this whole thing, either through contact (carrying it around), use (using whatever power you decide) or influence (how the dragon soul manipulates them).
Not to derail your thread, but I have to wonder why the lich lord was out of town. Vacation? Sick relative? Annual visit to the nearest bazaar?
Yeah, create a move to summon the knowledge of the dragon. Possible side effects: the dragon can trade the knowledge for promises that are magically bound, the dragon influences their mind, the possibility that cracks appear in the jar
Oh also, if you are carrying around a jar with a dragon in it, you’d better hope that jar never breaks….
Stefan Grambart Because he is searching for The Tablet of Life, an artifact thought lost to time. He needs it to make himself and the dragon lich immortal.
Kasper Brohus Allerslev You mean an ipad?
Kasper Brohus Allerslev Wynand Louw oh man, this has hit “adventure time” levels…
Kasper Brohus Allerslev There’s a similar item in may campaign. The Demon (in my case) soul offers the character power, a tempting and deadly move. Use of that power triggers a transformation into the form of the demon (horns, hooves, giant size) with associated further moves, all done as a compendium class taking several levels. The demon’s ulterior motive is to transform the character into a new body for itself, ripe for possession…
Though  guess it’s too obvious a trap, and the player’s haven’t bitten. Perhaps a transformation into a dragon might be more tempting for your players?
Adrian Brooks That sounds pretty cool! A bit inappropriate because of the established fiction, but sounds cool none the less!
