I picked this up and to be honest was a little disappointed.
WHAT I LIKED: The additional Folk of the Realm are good and appropriate for the genre and setting of a Three Musketeers type game where buckles are swashed and all that. The new gear and Magic Items are also setting appropriate and have a great mix of functionality and setting specific purposes.
WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: The two fronts are all mushed together on one page where as the three new item tags are given a huge layout on a page all there own, but that’s just a formatting issue, the info itself is solid.
The glaringest problem to be blunt is the Swashbuckler itself. He starts with three moves, one of which is a passive bonus to armor when using a precise weapon, then he has a INT based move for improvised fighting, then he has a CHA based move to distract and deal with large numbers of opponents. LET ME BE CLEAR I like the moves themselves but as it becomes very clear the Swashbuckler is a DEX/CHA based rogue type the INT based starting move is totally inappropriate, because there is not one single move in the rest of the book based on INT. It’s all CHA & DEX. and one advanced move based on WIS (which could be switched to CHA to keep inline with the other moves) that is somewhat clunky. I just don’t “get” the All For One move.
It’s clear by the advanced moves the character is geared around dueling and honorable fighting so the starting move of improvised weapons is somewhat useless as it relates to the rest of the moves. Personally I think the Impovised weapon move would work great if you introduced it along with the new item tags as a stand alone optional rule rather than a class specific move.
I see what you were trying to do with the swashbuckler, but as it stands now I would play or recommend the Dashing Hero playbook over the Swashbuckler, since it is very much in the same swashbuckling theme.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE: More moves!!! I was hoping to get some courtly based schemeing and social type moves. “When you spread a campaign of rumors roll +CHA, that type of thing. DW is lacking on the social skills front and I was hoping this suplement would include more moves for them.
I’d like to see the fronts expanded with a little write up for each of the NPC parties involved and a few adventure hooks outlined to get the fronts started would be excellent as well. A little brief intro by the author briefly explaining how this material was intended to be used at the begining would be great also, introduce yourself to your audience.
Overall the information is good and useful and if someone were running a 3 Musketeers type game I’d reccomend it, but the Swashbuckler needs work, IMHO
Eric Lochstampfor Thank you! This is the most comprehensive feedback that I’ve received on the product (if not the highest praise). 🙂 If you think of anything else that you wanted to add, my email is firehaven.west@gmail.com.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I really appreciate it. This information will improve immensely my next Histories offering.
If you were to review the item on DriveThru RPG, how many starts would you say you’d give it? If it’s four or five, would you consider posting a review?
Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
