GM’d my first session of Dungeon world, made huge mistakes and dropped the ball so many times. Had an absolute blast , my wife and I really enjoyed it . I am doing my research and reading so I can smooth it out and polish up the details. I cannot wait to have another go. Super fun major success.I love Dungeon world.
On another not I made two screens with inserts and art from fans. I will test drive the other one and see which one I liked the best. Will share notes and pics when I have a winner sorted.
Same way when I DMef my first session. Hard but fun. Doing a session zero is a great idea.
Can you describe some of your “mistakes”? I put them in quotes because if you had fun, they are probably pretty minor. But in any case, we can learn from them with you and that is always fun.
Storn Cook i kept forgetting to reduce damage because of armour. I was often remiss in adding additional damage and I did not direct the magic spells correctly. The errors were mostly book keeping .
I am certain that all will be ironed out next session, I will make notes and add reminders into my prep work. I did not fully realise how cleric spells worked and after the session I did some research and realised I had not interpreted the rules correctly. Cleric spells are all available so long as the cleric has prepared.
I forgot to award XP on failed roles, thankfully , the rolling was very good and there was not many failed attempts.
It balanced out okay when I applied the level up in the End session, i did not understand the method very well and levelled characters with insufficient XP. I will leave as is anyway, it was a first session all characters were first level and it would have been okay if I had awarded fails to XP.
I forgot to have character increase a stat as well, I will revisit that next session.
All in all very fun and adaptive. I am happy with the session and I worked a new system pretty well, learned alot. I was fortunate that my players were all new to RPG and we all had to work at the progress.
It was a roaring success, DW is very adaptive and flows very well. I love that it requires very little prep and still works. I am going to work on some battle mapping tools , I like the visual side of things so I can keep the fiction sorted . Will assist greatly with area effects and Fiction flow.
I recommend keeping the battle mapping very general. I have allot of players who enjoy dnd4e and i use VERY crude drawings of the over all layout and explain where they are vs the enemy. I don’t even use minis really.
It’s good to hear you enjoyed your session. I’m greedy and enjoy listening and watching others enjoy there games as much as i enjoy playing myself. I can never get enough tabletop lol.
