so does anyone do anything special when the players roll doubles. I feel like there is an opportunity there to do something, just not sure what it would be? I like the lightness of DW, so I don’t want it to be overly complicated, but when I see double’s it just says now that’s 10 the hard way or even 8 the hard way. Snake eyes and box cars should be something, with the rarity, and those are the easy ones (super shucks moment maybe double XP, and super awesome). Its the double 2, 3,4,5 that trouble and beguile me.
Peace,
In non-DW games I’ve used doubles to indicate either fatigue (time to camp!) on a journey, or loss of light (your torch sputters and dies) in a dungeon.
I changed the Barbarian from 1d8+1d6 to an ongoing +1, and just had appetite complications flare up on doubles. Math is very close to the same, and it’s a little easier to remember when it happens.
I think it’s a great opportunity to give yourself permission to add some kind of complication related to either: your system (tracking light sources? Doubles means a torch is used up), your setting (want Dark Sun style item scarcity? Then snake eyes means your weapon breaks), or your location (in the dragon’s lair? Double 1s 2s or 3s means that many kobold scouts show up).
Yeah but the problem with that is you have to fit within the moves. So a 2 is easy, and a 12 is easy. You don’t necessarily want to add in for 6 (just missed it) or an 8 which is success but at a cost. You don’t want penalize players just add an element. Maybe it is add something interesting to the world in general? I don’t know – won’t use it until I get something that fits the bill.
