A redditor doesn’t like how HP works in DW, and there was some mention of not being able to keep getting cut indefinitely. I ran with this “finite cuts” idea.

How is “# of gashes” different from “# of hit points”?
Stephanie Bryant don’t know, but OP was satisfied
Lol, ok.
Stephanie Bryant it moved the focus from “how long till I’m dead” to how do my wounds mechanically suck for me right now.
Under Rules as Written, a character with 1hp is just as hale and hard hitting as a character with 30, but you know if you’ve ever suffered an injury that there’s all sorts of problems that go along with.
At least that’s how I read it
I’ve noticed quite a few people who are dissatisfied with HP in Dungeon World lately and I can’t figure out why.
I’m not in that crowd. I’m not even going to use that rule, I just wrote it because it was an interesting idea. Justin Gordon did touch on where I was going with it. I may tweak it a bit more to help get it there.
I definitely understand the sentiment and I didn’t mean to seem negative about it. It just seems like it’s something a few people on here have been discussing lately and I wasn’t really sure where they were coming from.
Do you use debilities often in your games?
I thought I answered this before but it seems I didn’t. The answer is “not usually, because they’re not sufficiently specific in how you get rid of them.”. I do use them for a rule I have about drinking contests, but I scrapped them in favor of variable permanency “Conditions” for my Visual Novel World hack
I treat hit points a bit differently in my fiction. I view it as a proxy for your will to keep fighting. When take damage that reduces your hit points below zero, it means you lost your focus, or didn’t have the strength to lift your shield, and left yourself open to a fatal blow from the monster. All the damage you took leading up to that point was adding to your battle fatigue. If you walk away from a fight with 1 hp, you probably have some scrapes and bruises, but don’t necessarily have any serious wounds.
This also helps justify the HP recovery from make camp – a serious wound wouldn’t heal overnight, but battle fatigue certainly could.
that’s pretty awesome
Bryen Alperin aside from that being awesome, it occurs to me that it’s actually Recover, not Make Camp that restores HP. Though I could see a GM having places where they coincide. I think if you’re already going for something more gritty than standard DW, like gashes, you’ll probably change the recovery rate as well. For me I’d call it 1 Condition state. I’m gonna go edit that in now.
I was referring to this part of Make Camp: “When you wake from at least a few uninterrupted hours of sleep heal damage equal to half your max HP.”
I am intrigued by the idea of doing away with HP. You might want to look at “damage details” and “scars” in the Indie Hack for inspiration as well.
I don’t know what you mean by Indie Hack

aah. from that quick glance, scars don’t do what I want per se.
