  1. Congrats! I especially enjoyed your first issue. The Princess Bride is one my favourite books and movies. Your zine has given me a nice model for bringing my own favourite things into my games 🙂 (In other zine related news I run a zine shop called Tiny Boat in Newcastle, Australia). Hope you’re healing up well! L

  2. Lu Quade Wow! A zine shop?! That sounds so cool! Tell me more about it. I was part of an effort to make zines more prominent in the bookstore I used to work for and, except for a few creators, we hardly had the response we wanted. I was pretty disappointed.

I thinks zines are so dynamic and immediate in a way that more curated publishing fails to be. How were you able to translate that for your customers?

  3. Hi Logan (and Brian too seeing as it’s your thread! hehe). I literally JUST finished listening to your ‘The Cliff of Shuachi’ piece. It was actually really beautiful.

Yeah, the zine shop is a pretty fun project. It’s a not for profit venture, alongside an art space (and supported by other work I do too).

I was lucky enough to get offered a shopfront, and Newcastle hadn’t had a zine shop for a few years so I thought i’d try get one going. We have a pretty good selection of local zines for sale (but i’m thinking of trying to start a yearly prize to encourage more!!). We also have a bunch of other Australian zines and are starting to get more from further abroad: also a library of heaps of zines that stay in the space.

I think Newcastle has a lot of artists, musicians and writers for its size so that might mean it’s capable of supporting such a thing!? But yes, part of the mission is to translate the dynamism and immediacy of zines to people and try create a bigger audience for them. 🙂

  4. Lu Quade I wish you well in your venture! Do you have a zine of your own?

Thank you for the kind words about my shrine contest entry. I find that when you look at gaming, and fantasy in general, there’s a tendency to make faith into just another form of magic or a parlor trick. Part of my thinking in creating the Cliff of Shuachi was to make it something very personal and challenging.
