So I spent a good portion of last night reading A Sundered World, and I’m loving it. There are some really awesome things in it, and although I don’t know if I’ll play the setting yet, there are several things I would like to take over to Vanilla DW.
Most notably is the way races are used in SW. For anyone unfamiliar with it, SW uses a race – which has some starting moves and advanced moves associated with it – as well as the class (whereas in DW you pick a class and it has a couple race options).
I’ve been working on a “Morphling” class (with the help of several of you here… Thanks!), but I feel it should really be a Race, as it’s an amorphous being that “morphs” into other shapes.
So my question is, has anyone been using the SW idea of Race + Class in Vanilla DW?
So they are like racial compendium classes? Or am I misunderstanding?
Scott Selvidge, yes, it’s almost exactly like a compendium class. For example in SW the Dwarf Race has 2 starting moves, 5 level 2 – 5 moves, and 4 level 6 – 10 moves. Elf has 2/7/3. You get the starting moves for choosing that race (plus the starting moves from whatever class you choose), then when you level up you can choose from the appropriate race or class list, just like a compendium class.
It offers more variety than a simple mechanic benefit from a race in DW.
There are also new compendium classes in SW, so it’s not a replacement of compendium classes.
I’m working on a big racial project that’ll do exactly what you’re talking about. I’m planning to cover around 24 races. I have 8 drafts completed, including the classic human, halfling, dwarf, elf, and a bunch others that are half done. Pretty soon I should be putting out a notice looking for people to give feedback and possibly play test. Right now I’m testing the human and elf with my game group.
Since you mention a “Morphing” class, would “The Therianthrope” be a good option? Just got the book (review pending) and I really like the way David Guyll and Melissa Fisher create it.
Marcelo Paschoalin, I did a search of the PDF and only found the word once under a brief description of Elves (page 60). Can you point me to where else I might find it? I’m LOVING the book. Even if you don’t use everything from it it’s an amazing DW supplement!
Brian Holland, I meant “The Therianthrope” playbook, not some option inside “A Sundered World”. This is the playbook I’m talking about: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/193149/The-Therianthrope–A-Dungeon-World-Playbook

Oh gotcha. Thanks! I’ll take a look.
