Jason Lutes, am I right in assuming Adventuring Gear is intended to not be capable of producing items that are explicitly listed in the equipment list, such as rope, or a grappling hook?

Huh. Is always thought that was it’s very purpose, enabling your players to not worry about planning so much up front.
DW’s description is “Adventuring gear is a collection of useful mundane items such as chalk, poles, spikes, ropes, etc. When you rummage through your adventuring gear for some useful mundane item, you find what you need and mark off a use.” Which includes rope, but rope is not explicitly mentioned in DW’s equipment list like it is in FotF. And I don’t know if I’d call grappling hooks “mundane”.
I’m just wondering if the longer list of explicitly mentioned gear would have been intended to be “conjureable” by Adventuring Gear, or if they are called out because they aren’t “mundane”. But I’m probably over-analyzing it.
You can pull stuff from the list, sure. Christopher Meid is right about the purpose. I tried to price it right for the convenience factor. What constitutes “mundane” at your table is up to the Judge.
I use it extensively to avoid shopping time.
