I’ve been puzzling over this, too. From the examples (page 55 & 59) I believe the first number in the Themes column is the countdown. The examples list a small dungeon with two themes, countdown two, and a huge dungeon with three themes, countdown five. When the number of themes is not diced for, number of themes & their countdown is always the same.
Yeah, I’ve always made the countdown equal the number of themes.

Yes, that’s right. It’s on page 54:
“The Themes column on this table refers to both the number of themes and the size of each countdown.”
