Gibbering Pudding (Solitary, Terrifying, Amorphous)
Countless jaws (d10+2 damage, 1 piercing) 15 HP ,1 armor
(Ignores Armor)
Special Qualities: Immune to death by normal weapons; Vulnerable to fire. Fire damage to zero HP will destroy it forever.
A Gibbering Pudding is a horrible hybrid of a Black Pudding and Gibbering Mouther. It resembles a writhing mass of ooze covered with dozens of randomly placed multicolored eyes, writhing tentacles and gibbering mouths, all of different sizes and shapes.
instinct: To gibber and consume
Custom Moves:
– Gibbering causes -1 on all player rolls in earshot
– Gibber a random but useful message in an unknown tongue.
– Withdraw to regenerate when seriously damaged by mundane weapons.
Nitpicking, but I feel like some of those special qualities should become moves. Like this:
Moves:
– Gibber a random but useful message in an unknown tongue.
– Withdraw to regenerate when seriously damaged by mundane weapons.
Chris Stone-Bush Is that for a more pleasing layout or have i misunderstood special qualities? I changed it around a bit.
My feeling (and maybe I’m dead wrong here) is that Special Qualities are things the monsters are, while moves are for things they do. So “vulnerable to fire” and “immune to mundane weapons” feel like special qualities to me, while “retreat and regenerate” and “gibber a message” feel like moves. As I said though, I may be incorrect.
Chris Stone-Bush Sounds good to me and works with the rewrite. A move being something a monster does; a quality being what it is.
Ah, the gibbering mouther. What a fantastic monster.
I miss the “Turn nearby earth and stone to something like quicksand” move. That always struck me as particularly creepy, the idea that reality itself flowed and warped in its presence.
Also, I’d probably handle the gibbering as a custom move. Like, roll +WIS: 10+ you’re fine; 7-9 stand gaping for a few moments; 6- lose your shit.
The deranged alchemists who created this beauty also combined Mouther DNA with many other blob forms. Coming soon to a dungeon near you: As many gibbering nightmares as it is possible to imagine!
Actually I like the Gibbering Mouther quicksand move too I just can’t figure out decent mechanics for it. Maybe the Gibbering Shoggoth will have it. Or the Gibbering Gelantinous Trapezoid? Ochre Mouther? Singing Ooze?
I like the sanity roll mechanics but I’m saving it for the monsters with more Shoggoth DNA. The Gibbering Pudding is only the start. Also I don’t like giving any one monster too many powers. I wonder what a doppelganger- mouther hybrid would look like?
All you really need is to write down “Liquefy nearby earth and stone” as a monster move, and then the DM can drop it on the party any time the monster makes an attack. A custom move is cool, but you can get a long way with narration and Defy Danger. (Personally, I’m not really organized enough at the table to keep track of a lot of custom moves anyway.)
colin roald I like the move but I’d rather put it on another monster. There’s a lot of life in these Lovecraftian blobs.
Yeah, I completely agree with colin roald. You could make a custom liquify ground move if you wanted to. But there’s no reason you couldn’t just make it a monster move and leave it at that. 😀
I may do a Chaos Blob next. I like the “warping reality” idea.
