The river they’re travelling on floods from the sea every few years, bringing ocean water halfway through a continent. What we are looking at here is the remnants of the Pirate Fort, a forgotten citadel of past misdeeds. Pirates held this part of the river for decades, perhaps a hundred years ago, before someone -or something – evicted them.
Spoiler: it’s lizard folk
