Okay, I got lots of helpful feedback on the Fighter’s playbook, so here’s the current version of the Thief. Let me know if you see any glaring issues and/or have any suggestions for improvement.

First thing I noticed: the two options for Purloin feel about the same. In most circumstances nobody would know they’re missing something until they go looking for it, would they?
That being said, I love the Move Silently options, and “Danger to Society” is one of my favorite move names ever.
I love this approach! I’m not in love with take the time to reflect upon a recent success or failure as in makes the thief seem too… contemplative? But that is a matter of taste. At the table I would pitch it as When you spin half truths about your exploits to allies or strangers or When you lurk in brooding silence and plot. Those seem more flavorful and fun but probably fall well within the scope of the original.
Ooh, Dylan Green, I like those options much better! I was also not in love with that trigger.
When you start thinking about your next big score…
When you rest up somewhere and plot…
Some possible tweaks:
Purloin
10+: and they won’t notice until they look for it.
7-9: it’s yours and they don’t see you take it.
Backstab
When you use a hand weapon to attack a surprised or defenseless person.
– You dodge back out of their reach (rather than “you don’t get into melee with them”)
Sharpshooter
Should this be +INT instead of +WIS?
Slip Free Rename to Escape?
When you slip free of the bonds that hold you…
– You are pursued (rather than “Whoever bound you knows that you’re free”)
Assassinate
Seems reasonable to also allow change of Mark after a failed assassination attempt, provided the attempt was genuine.
Mercenary
[min. +1 STR; level 5+; must be Neutral, Chaotic, or Evil]
Danger to Society
Reads fine without the ‘already’
Thanks, Michael D — Great notes.
Right now I’m going with:
Purloin
When you take something out from under someone’s nose, roll +DEX: on a 10+, it’s yours, and they won’t notice until they look for it; on a 7-9, it’s yours, but they notice it’s gone right away.
+WIS on Sharpshooter made more sense to me than +INT because it seems like a perception/intuitive timing thing to me rather than something calculated, but I’m reconsidering…
Changing Assassinate to:
Assassinate
When you declare an individual as your mark, and later deal damage to your mark by Backstabbing, that damage is doubled. You may only have one mark at a time, and must spend 1 cunning to choose a new mark.
Jason Lutes Your Purloin and Assassinate revisions look good – especially like spending 1 cunning to change your mark.
On that last, refreshing your cunning will need to be a non-trivial task.
