I just got a copy of Yoon-suin, which is a pretty amazing Asian influenced, randomly generated OSR setting book, and I was wondering if anyone had tried (or even thought about) using it with Freebooters?  I realize both items are very new, so its probably a long shot, but I think the two books would mesh together really well.

  1. I think they might too! Unfortunately, when my order of Yoon-Suin arrived it was an empty, crushed box, so I haven’t been able to take it for a spin. Someone at USPS in Atlanta is enjoying a stack of print-on-demand books at my expense.

  2. Jason Lutes That sucks!  I think when you eventually get your copy, you’ll really like it.  I flipped open to the random table to generate the denizens of an Elephant Racing Stable and was immediately sold on the book.  Now I just have to finish my Beyond the Wall game and try this idea out.

  3. John Marron  how are you liking Beyond the Wall? I have been thinking about picking it up for a while now, if for no other reason than the character creation, lol. I havent seen any live plays but it looks pretty good from the reviews I have seen. Also thanks for the post I will have to look into Yoon-Suin.

  4. Drop Dice Beyond the Wall is great!  The playbooks (sort of lifepath character generation things) are worth the price alone.  The system is just stripped down Basic D&D, but has a nice take on magic.  The game does a great job of creating the feel of its source material (coming of age/YA fantasy).  Unfortunately, Dungeon World (and other *World games) have pretty much ruined me for traditional systems, so if I were to run Beyond the Wall again, I’d try to find a way to meld the playbooks with a *World system.

Definitely check out Yoon-suin.  If you like the random generators as creative springboards approach that Perilous Wilds uses, I think you’ll like Yoon-suin, which is basically a giant book of very evocative setting and situation generation tables.
