So, I’m going to start my first Dungeon World campaign in two weeks, and I’m thinking of using the first part of a Pathfinder Adventure Path as sort of a launching pad. My thought is that I can pull encounter ideas, NPCs and plot elements as needed, and if the PCs go off in a completely different direction, so be it.

Does anyone have any thoughts/feedback on this idea? Also, do those of you who have experience with the PF Adventure Paths have any advice on which might be the most suited to DW?

  1. It works very well as long as you use it as a general guideline and not try to shoe horn it into DW as written. I’ve used quite a few PF modules as inspiration for DW.

  2. I’d advise against an Adventure Path for your first time running DW. They’re almost antithetical to a number of the principles (be a fan, ask questions, begin/end with the fiction) and one of the agendas (play to see what happens).

I think starting your first game with a site-based dungeon is way better. Allows some structure and prep (so you don’t feel like you’re winging it too much), but easily bends to player inputs about the world and changes in PC motivation. Just be sure to have some good, leading questions that tie the PCs to the site and make them want (need) to explore it.

  3. Here’s a page of DW-specific adventure starters that may be less taxing to your GM resources during the first session:

Marshall Miller  has quite a few good ones here as well: http://www.finemessgames.com/DWsupplements

If you like some elements from a PF adventure path, you should totally use them! There’s no harm at all in adding those things into the mix when you’re filling the character’s lives with adventure.

  4. Yeah, I actually ran my first one-shot yesterday using the first part of The Brinewall Legacy as a stand-alone dungeon. I’d been planning to use it for the purposes I described above, but since one of my players is in an actual PF campaign that’s based in Sandpoint (the town where that adventure path starts), I’m now looking at the Legacy of Fire path. It’s designed to involve mass combat apparently, but since I’m just using it for setup and such, I think it could work.

Dirk Detweiler Leichty, thanks for alerting me to those. They look like great models for setting up future sessions, and good resources for running in general.
