I’ve been thinking about running a DW or BW game set in REH’s Hyborea. What would I need for DW to really capture the mood of a good Conan yarn? Would standard play books work or are there better alternatives?

It depends. Barbarian is the trivial choice. Trocero is a fighter, other characters may vary
Go Burning Wheel, there is a Barbarian setting lifepath selection on the wiki.
Everyone else by the book. So awesome.
FAE is another good option, Check this out:

Probably you will have much more differences with the magic users. I would not use the wizard and the cleric, and I would check some alternative playbooks
there are a couple of AW Conan hacks out there.
You just gave me the impetus to finally put some formatting on this Dungeon Stater: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0lFq3ECDQDQeTkxMjd5WnVxMWc/view?usp=sharing
I’d recommend using it with the humans-only character sheets by Blang!: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B12bB1b9dQX8Z2lLTUFaQjZ5dEk&usp=sharing
As to your original question, I don’t think standad DW will give you quite the Conan feel without a lot of reflavoring. If I were going to do it, I’d probably:
– assemble some classes from Class Wafare
– replace the race moves with “path” moves
– make nationality (what REH would have called “race”) a line to pick from for look
– make name lists by nationality, using REH’s names, etc. as
If you want something that feels even closer to the Conan stories, as Chris S said, there are a few full-fledged Apocalypse World hacks. I think this one is the slickest (you definitely need AW for it to make sense, though).

That’s my favorite of the two.
