Has anyone ran a campaign or created alternate starting classes where you are basically untrained nobodies? Like playing out the character background/creation. It might not be too glamorous to be a stable boy for a session but it would make it extra sweet when you save the town and have your eyes opened to a larger world.

I actually did that with my players using the slave pit demo. Turned out great!
There’s also a villager playbook that takes inspiration from Dungeon Crawl Classics.
And this wonderful little monster by Jason Lutes:

If you don’t want to commit to the “meat grinder” experience of a funnel adventure and keep to a more typical “humble beginnings” feel you could do it with some minor tweaks. (Replace rolling random stats with using a standard spread planning for a desired class, use the village playbook, and just keep the deadliness of the game at a normal level instead of cranking it to 11.)
I would just RP it and have them roll+Nothing when necessary. Maybe give em an occasional +1 for really good fictional positioning at DM fiat.
Funnel World is that experience. I ran it recently and it went well. If you do use it have the players roll up at least two back up characters. Trust me.
Thanks. Everyone. Will check out Funnel World
