In response to Ezio Melega’s post about the Italian Dungeon World challenge [at least I consider it a challenge!], I have been really digging into the soul of this playbook. I have a half-list of advanced moves but I want to see what everyone else would expect to be included on that list. What moves would you have expected to see or would want to see based on this first page?

  1. Author is James Enge. I’m not sure I can honestly recommend his books; I like them, but I he’s never sure super sure about his tone.

I’ve got some moves jotted down somewhere based on him and the kind of “making” he does; I’ll see if I can find them. They might be relevant.

  2. Ah… here they are. In retrospect, these are much more Morlockian than what I think you’re going for.  But still, you might find them useful.

    Maker of Things

When you craft a mundane item to suit your needs, roll +INT. On a 7+, choose one. On a 7-9, the GM will choose another.

    • you can’t just do it; it takes some time, about as long as it’d take a normal craftsman

    • you need raw materials or tools ; find them or cannibalize something else

    • the best you can do is shoddy work; functional for now, but it falls apart or fails soon

    Material Pseudoscience

When you first attempt to manipulate a type of matter to suit your needs, choose one of the effects below:

    – it is now 1/2 as ____

    – it is now twice as ___

    – when exposed to __ it _____s

    – it is impervious to _____

    – it repels ____

    – it binds itself to ____

    – you distill out the essence of a particular trait

    – you impregnate it with a distilled essence

The GM will tell you one of the following:

    – it takes a long time to do

    – the change is brief and unstable

    – you can only affect a very small amount at a time

    – you need a full lab and workspace

    – it also (pick another problematic effect)

    – you must expend a large amount of _ to make it happen

    – you need access to a __ to do it

Make note of the effect and its requirements/limitations for later.

When you first sit down to do this, roll +INT. On a 10+, it works as planned! On a 7-9, the GM will reveal another requirement or limitation (make note of it, too).  On a 6-, oh my that did not work like you expected.

    Things Fall Apart

You can always ask the GM “what is the weakest point of this thing?” and get an honest answer. Take +1 forward to act on that information.

  3. Yeah, I love the idea of defining a thing you can do and that becoming a fact which can be exploited later.

So like “I can distill out the essence of flammibility from something” and the GM says “sure, but that makes it twice as heavy.”

Later, the player goes: “so if I then infuse something with a whole lot of essence of flamibility, that will make it lighter than air?” Yup.  But also prone to go up in flames.

(That one’s stolen straight from the Morlock stories.)

  4. True, yes. That was my intended effect with the GM tags. Yes, you have an item that does something, but you’re going to have to deal with this effect as well [on 7-9].

I also really like the idea of being able to make powerful objects, paintings, or anything really, that isn’t an object created directly for fighting. For example, this book started out as just a painter, and the moves essentially allowed him or her to affect reality by painting what he wanted it to be. It is still possible with this book, but now incorporates any type of art you can think of, leaving it much more open to the creativity of the player.
