To add a question for Ranger Week…  Has anyone done a rebuild of the class to do away with the Animal Companion?

To add a question for Ranger Week…  Has anyone done a rebuild of the class to do away with the Animal Companion? Something more along the line of a Scout, focusing more on the stealthy hunter aspect than the beast partner aspect? If not, what ideas might fit as a decent replacement for the Animal Companion move tree?

  1. Well, let’s start by making a list of alternative tricks for a ranger besides an animal companion. How about traps? Let’s replace the animal companion with:

    Trapper

When you set a trap and a monster stumbles upon it, roll+WIS. *On a 10+, choose 2 from the list. *On a 7-9, choose 1:

    – Deal your damage

    – The target is ensnared, and cannot escape until it breaks the trap

    – The trap sets off a loud alarm. No matter where you are, you’ll hear it

The maximum number of traps you may have active is equal to your WIS. Materials for traps cost 3 coins and have 1 weight.

Now for some new advanced moves…

    Vicious Traps

When your traps deal damage, deal +1d4 damage. If your trap ensnares its target, it also cripples their leg, the target’s running speed is reduced significantly until the injury is healed.

    Cunning Traps

You may specify a certain type of creature when you set a trap, such as “goblins” or “undead”, only that creature type will set off the trap.

I’d like some more effects for traps. Is WIS the right stat to use here, or maybe INT?

    And a couple more moves…

    One With The Land

Choose a land from the druid’s Born of the Soil list. While you are in your chosen land you take +1 ongoing to Hunt and Track and Called Shot, and you may set traps while in your chosen land at no cost.

    Hunter’s Mark

When you draw an enemy’s blood, you may declare that enemy to be your quarry. Your attacks and traps deal +1d4 damage against the quarry, and when you track your quarry you cannot get a 6-, treat that as a 7-9.

  2. Sure thing. I post up all of my stuff, it just isn’t quite ready yet. Basically made the Ranger more focused on the mastery of ranged combat, using modified versions of one of the Marksmen moves and building from there.
