When you spend Defend hold to redirect an attack to yourself, can you get a Defy Danger roll, or do you just absorb the attack?

Not in my version of the reading, but I do let them keep spending hold to half the damage, etc.
Depends on what you’re doing after you redirect that attack.
Okay, example. Thief steps in front a volley of spears headed toward Wizard, rolls a 10+ so 3 Hold. Spends a hold to redirect attack toward himself. Spear coming right at his grill. “I snatch the spear out the air!”
I see two ways to handle this. One, he takes the damage but can still halve it. Two, he can Defy Danger/DEX to catch the spear, but lose his Defend hold. What do you think?
It doesn’t sound to me like “I snatch the spear out of the air” is redirecting the attack, more like trying to intercept it. I’d allow a Defy Danger, maybe, depending on the tone of the game so far, and if they failed, it’s a choice – them or the Wizard.
When there is a spear comming at the Wizard the Thief (normally) can’t just magically make them target him now. They are in the air and on their way. What they could do is jump in front of them to get hit instead of the Wizard. That is redirecting the attack.
Okay, let’s say the Thief had stepped in PRIOR to the volley of spears (rolling Defend), because the Wizard was badly wounded and the party was surrounded by goblins. Then the spears came flying at the Wizard and the Thief used a hold to redirect.
And then did the “I catch the spear” thing.
Patrick S. he doesn’t has to redirect per se because the attack is coming at him anyway.
The thing is ‘defend’ and ‘defy danger’ are two separate moves. If someone is wanting to redirect the damage to themselves, then it implies that they are spending their time and focus in that moment to either jump in the way or pull the attack into themselves. Doesn’t really leave much time for the to ALSO dodge the attack they are pulling into themselves.
What Charles Persall says.
I’d let them defy danger on top of defending, if only because stopping a spear inches from your face is awesome. Maybe even have the moves interact – on a 7-9, he catches it but has to lose the rest of his hold as he switches focus. And of course on a miss, spear through the face. Ouch. Forget about standing in defense…or standing at all.
