Here’s one for the crew – could Dungeon World handle Discworld well? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes! Actually, the wizard is based on the Discworld wizards. Also, +Adrian Thoen made a Fool playbook that would be perfect for playing Rincewind.
Probably more of a compendium class for Rincewind.
I’ve got to think about this.
I would have gone the same route, but it’s a cool class from what I’ve seen of it.
Wait, what?? Dungeon World Wizard was based on Discworld wizards??
They’re pretty much lifted from D&D/the Dying Earth aren’t they?
I read somewhere in the book that they were influenced by them, but their competency and their mechanics are mostly Vancian influenced.
I read Discworld religiously during High School, so of course Discworld is all over DW. I think DW would be a pretty good fit for some of the novels at least (a few are probably too introspective to really work in DW).
As for the wizard, some of our approach was definitely flavored by Discworld (there’s a quote right there in the book), especially the pompous academic take on wizardry (which Pratchett didn’t originate, but did do a great job with). So, overall: DW wizards are certainly influenced by Discworld, but maybe not based on it.
Yeah, influenced would have been a better word for it than based. My bad.
I would change the end of session questions!
Am I alive?
Am I running?
Am I running TO somewhere, or FROM something?
How could you simulate Grimes, Carrot, Angua, Granny, Nanny and the young one and Moist von Lipwig?
If you were limited to the base classes:
Grimes: Figher
Carrot: Paladin
Angua: Druid
Granny: Wizard
Nanny: Bard
Tiffany: Ranger (the Mac Nac Feegles would be her companions)
Moist von Lipwig: Bard
You mean as personalities? I don’t know if I would give them stats… They should remain part of the fiction.
But you could make some base classes to cover many of those character concepts.
I’d add a restriction to Angua: Can only shapeshift into a wolf.
I’d add the ability for Tiffany to select one wizard spell of a level equal to current level – 1 per level (i.e. level 1, no spells, level 2, one first-level wizard spell)
I’d love to see someone draw up some proper compendium classes though 😀
The thing is they don’t run away. Angua is a one trick pony and more like the skin walker compendium class. And that’s just at a glance.
I love love love the “Did we run away?” end of session question. Discworld Con is the first weekend of July – anybody else going? Want to play some DW inspired by the Disc?
Trey Palmer “I run, therefore I am; more correctly, I run, therefore with any luck I”ll still be.” —Rincewind
Tain’t all Rincewind.
I’m more of a Grimes and Granny Weatherwax fan myself. Susan and Death can also be entertaining.
Read any of those portions of the series?
grimes? Do we mean Vimes? That his, His Grace The Duke of Ankh, Sir Commander Samuel Vimes?
I’ll admit, I came to the series late – I am on Small Gods.
My “questions” post was a reference specifically to Rincewind; not trying to suggest those are appropriate for all the Discworld characters 🙂
I quite enjoyed Pyramids. Sad that Teppic isn’t in any more books 🙁
Yes, I meant Vimes. What I get for doing it fast and on a phone.
Weird, I saw what you wrote, I wrote it myself… Nothing felt wrong…?! My built-in spellcheck is broken 🙁
And yeah, Pyramids was my favourite for years (until I read Thief of Time).
