Finished our first session today. I’m playing with 3 guys who have never played Dungeon World or Freebooters before, and my wife (whose played everything I’ve played). We have one of each class. That wasn’t deliberate, it just worked out that way!

Orcs hadn’t been seen in 200 years but there were rumors that there were orcs coming down from this mountain, same mountain as Dwimmermount – an OSR megadungeon. Our first encounter, the PCs found a room full of orcs and proceeded to brace for a fight.

The halfling magic-user cast Memory of Smoking Mud, not to slow the orcs down but to nauseate and confuse them into thinking they had somehow trod through a swamp.

The thief separated from the group in order to backstab an orc as they rushed the party from their encampment.

The cleric of Lieutenant Columbo (tenet: Dominate the corrupt; domain: Intelligence and Torment) cursed them, striking fear into their hearts as the party met them blade to blade.

The fighter went last and charged into the middle of the orcs.

Only a few rolls and half the orcs were dead, the rest turned to flee.

We ended the session with them hearing chittering sounds from behind, as the sound of their battle had awoken something else in the darkness.

We had our third session of Freebooters on the Frontier yesterday, and the PCs had a TPK within the first hour.

I finally got around to making one of my 2-page playbooks for Johnstone Metzger ‘s Dungeoneer class.

I finally got around to making one of my 2-page playbooks for Johnstone Metzger ‘s Dungeoneer class. Lots of text made for a sliced-up layout, but it still works in the format I limited myself to. Jim Roslof artwork FTW!

I started writing this post about how I feel like maybe I don’t understand Dungeon World very well, and here was this DW game I got roped into GMing for a few sessions that didn’t really end the way I was expecting, but as I typed it turned into a “I really fucking hate meta-gaming” post and had very little to do with anything Dungeon World.

Whether they know they’re doing it or not, how do you handle players who meta-game?

Ran my first session of Dungeon World last week and the players ended up infiltrating a pocket dimension where a divine entity was being imprisoned. After the game I came up with this:

OF BLOOD & LIGHTNING

You traversed the etheric prisons of gods and managed to escape with your lives. Whether it was the air you breathed in that otherspace, or the electrification of an undying consciousness wracking your physical essence, something has altered your blood. The next time you level up you can choose to take this move:

POWER HAS A PRICE

When you spill your own blood you can alter reality by shaping the energies released from your sacrifice. With a weapon that can rend skin and sinew, roll your damage against yourself, and describe how the latent magic in your blood manifests, you fulfill a basic move as if you rolled a 10+.

If you have Power Has A Price, these count as class moves for you, you can choose from them when you level up:

BLOOD SPEAKS

You can smell the spiritual legacy of spilled blood. You always know whenever you are close to someone who has tortured, murdered, or used blood magic (including Power Has A Price).

BLOODBOND

When you feed your own blood to another person you gain leverage over them. For NPCs, it’s the same as using parley and hitting a 10+. For PCs, they cannot interfere with you anymore.

HEARTBEAT OF THE WORLD

In those moments just before waking, when your sleeping mind can hear the sounds of nature and reality soaks gently into your brain, the foundation of the otherspaces can be tapped by your waking consciousness. Name a location you have visited at least once, you know what is happening there and until you sleep again can spout lore at any time to peer through the otherspace and view it while you’re awake.

ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION OF THE GODS

When you roll a 12+ while discerning realities, you can ask any question you want.

Here are some things I made for my gaming group. I’m working on single-page spellbooks and single-page basic move booklets. Anything I personally make for Dungeon World will eventually appear linked on this page.

One of my gaming groups is starting a new Dungeon World campaign and for my new character I decided to create my own “playbook.” I think some of the text is a little cramped, but I don’t know exactly how to free up the space and make it flow a little nicer. Thoughts?
