dungeon world actual play

small group today, just two players:

bug, hobbit/satyr thief of indeterminate gender raised by centaurs

olive, young lady dwarf fighter, formerly enslaved arena fighter from the smokepoint arena, famous for her towering size of five feet and for escaping

smokepoint is a cityat the base of a volcano where overlord ketandu leads with an iron fist. the majority of the population is near human, but they all have deep gravelly voices and their eyes appear the be glass and filled with smoke.

after a long trek across the obsidian sand desert our heroes finally make it to the grand city of smokepoint with dawn approaching (smokepoint was established to be mostly nocturnal due to how hot a desert of black sand would get during the day) so the gates were being closed. the guards ask them for papers, so without saing any words olive throws bug onto one of the guards. bug smears the guard’s face with golden root and convinces him that bug is a famous chef who has come to open a mushroom croquette restaurant in the smokepoint hobbittown. the guard admits he is a huge fan of hobbit cuisine and lets them in. olive grumpily says nothing the entire time.

they decide they must seek out dandy, the dwarf leader of the revolutionary thespians who helped olive escape from the arena all that time back. they approach the entrance to the dwarf quarter and mushroom farms, bug again convinces the dwarf guard to let them down, but recognizes olive, whose face is on wanted posters.

once in the tunnels, olive goes to a barber and has her head and beard shaved, much to the offence of the dwarf barber. they then find graffiti that leads them to a door in a back alley cul de sac where drunk guards are hassling a poor sensitive dwarf named poppy. olive and bug kill the guards, who, when hurt, smoke pours from the wounds rather than blood, and when killed their bodies rapidly turn to ash.

poppy leads our heroes down the the headquarters of the thespians, who have been rehearsing the theatrical revolution of epic proportions. dandy tells the heroes of the plan to overthrow ketandu, and asks for their help in procuring the hand of a very special guard whose hand can get into ketandu’s penthouse.

bug goes undercover at the oldest hobbit restaurant in town, the halfling inn (halfling is a racial slur for hobbits) whose young owner is sympathetic with the thespian revolutionaries. eventually bug finds the gate guard who had fallen for bug and bug’s stories of croquettes and asks him if he could help find the special guard whose hand is required for dandy’s plan. unfortunately another guard overhears the conversation and pretends to be said special handed guard, but instead he leads them right to ketandu who is very happy to see olive safe and sound, though clean shaven she may be.

and thus ended the session. i was so happy that the olive’s player included the little detail that an uncharacteristically jolly dwarf named dandy had helped her escape and had been trying to form a theater for dwarves, who tend to mostly be grumpy folk. this jist turned into a revolutionary cell of performing troops and theatrical firebrands. dwarf situationists in a fantasy world. what fun! as the whole world is a stage, and act 1 of the revolution has just begun. so fun to play dandy.

just gm’d my most successful and complete and unfumbled session of anything ever.

i live in a strange agricultural community, so my roster will include the professions of those involved

me gm, former dairy farmer, current ceramicist and invasive plant eradicator

tk, young dairy farmer, played bug, hobbit thief raised by centaurs

jt, forestry and horse enthusiast, jack of all trades, played hapless centaur wizard named xorczk

kg, orchardist, former ceramicist, householder, played alea, the centaur cleric of the earth mother

lg, orchardist, mushroom enthusiast, played cornelius dragontoe, gnome bard with a love of buckets and bugs

we played a modified mornigstar slave pits, the slave pits of Maestro’Z

we established that maestro z was a satyr dark sorceress who was trying to destroy the world and rebuild it in her image. she is the former lover of xorczk during their days in the wizard college in the forest. she is the former muse of the bard until he learned her true name. she is also the true mother of bug, who is half-hobbit-satyr, which explains the excessive body and foot hair and nubbin horns. the earth mother’s enemies are trolls, the undead, and griffons (as they are envoys of her rival god of the sun).

during the earthquake the bard tried to springsteen the slaves to revolt but a 6- created a sultry song which killed all the rest of the slaves. the squid-faced fox bodied squitsune taskmaster tried to stop them, but alea blocked them off and they went to the killing pits where slept the uncultured troll. while sneaking past they ran into fire beetles, but cornelius was able to pied piper them with his ukelele and they left the sleeping troll alone.

when they reached the chasm they found the assassin vines right away. cornelius used all but one of the fire beetles as vine fodder to clear the path, they got a little loot and continued on their way. cornelius kept his last fire beetle in his drag bucket as a pet.

as they got closer it is revealed that maestro z abandoned bug as a baby among the centaurs, who, it has been established, drove all hobbits from their homeland. she did not expect her old flame, xorczk, to raise the child in the centaur community, which he did. turns out she left her child there to die due to a prophecy.

anyway, bug slips away, leaving everyone behind to confront the sorceress solo. conelius tries to distract her with a marvin gaye style slow jam, but it only affects xorczk who spends the rest of the evening entranced in the nostalgia (jt went to bed)

meanwhile alea was trying to find a zombie head to use in a ritual to appease her diety when she ran into maestro z’s gollish lieutenant who sliced up alea’s arm. that’s when bug came out of the shadows and dispatched the gnoll with an easy backstabbing.

after some struggles involving cornelius and maestro z over one thing or the other, maestro -xs true name was revealed to be micky zit. she was furious, and thoroughly embarrassed. alea made sure to pray to the earth mother to lether know the silly name of this silly witch. in the end, bug, using golden root and mother-child bonding to destroy the ritual and save the day.

eveeyone who stayed to the end were very happy, we had a lot of laughs, and the beetle in the bucket is the best. anyway it felt good to finally not stumble through without a satisfying story.

thanks

so i have been asked to run a one shot for someone’s birthday next friday. problem is, most of the folks who will be there have never played an rpg before. dungeon world was easy for me to pick up because A) i am familiar with the genre and B) i read the rule book several times. i have, in the past, had a hard time explaining it in other games i have run, where it takes an hour or more to get through half a character sheet. how is a good way to introduce dungeon world to complete newcomers in a time efficient way?

I guess maybe this a super newb question, but how does the terrifying tag work?

I guess maybe this a super newb question, but how does the terrifying tag work? Does it call for dd+wis? How do y’all use fear in yr games?

Just had an informal session zero last night with some new players.

Just had an informal session zero last night with some new players. One of the PCs is a snake woman, her mother was a witch and her father was a basilisk. I am playing around with a racial move for her to paralyze or turn folks to stone, cos thats what she wants. Here is what I have so far:

When you draw a creature’s gaze with your terrifying beauty and open your third eye, roll+CHA, on a 7+ the target begins to turn to stone. On a 7-9 choose 1:

-You draw the gaze of an ally, and they too begin to turn to stone

-Your third eye sees its reflection, and you cannot open it again until you rest

What do y’all think? I would like another choice or two for 7-9, but i’m drawing a blank. Thanks.

Hey, new to the community, but an avid lover of this game. Though I haven’t played this game yet (farm life), I spend a lot of time thinking about it.

I watched howl’s moving castle a few times recently, and I was thinking about the idea of a wizard who can lose control of themselves and become a monster from overuse of their magic.

I was thinking for a class move based on this, tied to a fatigue mechanic a la Awful Good Games’ wizard from A Sundered World.

Say there is a sentience or humanity or sanity or whatever stat, either tied to constitution or set at an arbitrary number, that decreases each time the wizard’s fatigue matches their current HP.

When your fatigue equals your current hp, (maybe you lose 1 sentience no matter what and) roll +nothing/CON/CHA/WIS/INT (unsure which). On a 10+ you maintain control for now, but you cannot use your magic until you rest for an hour or so. On a 7-9 (maybe you lose 1 sentience only on 9 or lower and)choose 1:

you maintain some control but become an arcane monster until you can rest, lose 2 sentience instead of 1

you lose conciousness and deal your damage to 1/2/3 nearby creatures (enemy or ally) of the GM’s choosing

sentience can only be reset though some archaic means, i guess, maybe through dying? transferring the corruption to your surroundings? storing in a place of power? human sacrifices? standard ritual? idk, haven’t gotten that far yet, but wondering what y’all think.
