Trying to get better about polishing up and posting all the stuff I have sitting around on my old computer’s hard drive. Here’s a free and slightly updated version of The Path of Ghosts for DW.

So I know folks have long asked for a one-up version of Dark Heart (rather than the spreads), so I finally dug up the original files from my old computer and made one. I posted these new files on DriveThru/RPGNow and it should have sent a notice out to everyone who purchased it that way, but here it is for everyone who received their copy through the original Kickstarter. Please only share this link with other folks who already have it. I’ll probably take it down in a week or two, just FYI. And my next project is converting it to 6×9″, so I can put it up on Lulu as a POD print version.

As a bonus, here’s a sample of the Planarch booklet I’ve been working on most recently, which is currently called A Refining Fire. It’s like Dune + the Bible + the Royal Geographical Society combined. Various science-based cults known as “mystery halls” search for truth on a plane covered in red sands. Not sure if this one or one of the others will get finished first.

Hey folks!

Hey folks!

Hey folks! The final version of Planarch Codex: Wintry Plane, the second booklet in my planar/postmodern fantasy series for Dungeon World, is now available through both DriveThru (PDF) and Lulu (print).

Wintry Plane is kind of a bizarre product that’s difficult to describe: it contains a series of short adventure seeds for Dungeon World that connect with many of the same themes as the first Planarch Codex module (Dark Heart of the Dreamer), but these seeds are interwoven within a frame story inspired by Italo Calvino’s classic postmodern novel If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler.

The Planarch Codex series is an excuse for me to deconstruct and then rebuild our expectations for what a fantasy RPG product can be, inspired by strange influences such as postmodern literature, and this is definitely an attempt at doing that.

One brief review of Wintry Plane said it’s “a very lyrical love-letter, with dungeoneering as its method and natality as its theme… When [the author] says in self-depreciation that it’s a ‘weird’ adventure, what he means is that it’s adorable, lovely, and sincere.”

Anyway, hope you like it, but it’s totally cool if it’s not your thing. I’ve got more weird DW stuff planned for this coming year, though the stuff I’m working on now isn’t as out-there as this is.

Hey Planarchs!

Hey Planarchs!

Hey Planarchs! I finally decided this supplement is done and put it up on Lulu for print sales. There’s more info on the post linked below. Thanks for your patience with the slowness of new Planarch materials emerging. I hope to have at least 2-3 things happening next year! (fingers crossed)

The Calvino Cycle or, If on a Wintry Plane a Freebooter, the second excerpt from the Planarch Codex, is now available in print form through Lulu. It is at a new 6×9″ size, matching the dimensions of Dungeon World, Class Warfare, and so on, but is a 32-page B&W saddle-stitched booklet printed in Lulu’s highest-quality paperback format.

It’s kind of a bizarre product that’s difficult to describe: it contains a series of short adventure seeds for Dungeon World that connect with many of the same themes as the first Planarch Codex module (Dark Heart of the Dreamer), but these seeds are interwoven within a frame story inspired by Italo Calvino’s classic postmodern novel If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler. Basically, the Planarch Codex series is an excuse for me to deconstruct and then rebuild our expectations for what a fantasy RPG product can be, inspired by postmodern literature, and this is definitely an attempt at doing that.

Ariel Cayce, in a brief review of Wintry Plane, said it’s “a very lyrical love-letter, with dungeoneering as its method and natality as its theme… When [Jonathan] says in self-depreciation that it’s a ‘weird’ adventure, what he means is that it’s adorable, lovely, and sincere.”

If you already purchased an earlier version of this booklet from me, or received one for free because you helped review or playtest it, I would like to offer you a copy of the new version for free as well. Just email me or plus me into a private thread with your address and I’ll send it along, since I can get copies at cost from Lulu. Folks I think might be in this category include: Lillian Cohen-Moore Jackson Tegu Ariel Cayce Lukas Myhan and anybody else who might have picked it up at GoPlay NW 2014. I’d also like to send copies to Claudia Cangini and Paolo Bosi, if you’re interested, since otherwise this booklet wouldn’t exist. In many ways, it’s also a love letter to all the Italian fans and translators of Dungeon World and the Planarch Codex. There are definitely more than a few “Easter eggs” in it for the Italian indie RPG community.

Late December is a terrible time to release a new product, so this is essentially a pre-release to thank everybody who’s supported my games over the past few years, giving you folks early access (if you want it and are not already buried in holiday expenses). Feel free to reshare if you want, but I’d honestly rather folks support Indie Mixtape Vol 2 if you have limited funds right now: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/141681/Indie-Mixtape-Volume-2

If you don’t care about print (or if shipping is too expensive), the final PDF version should be up on DriveThru/RPGNow shortly. The PDF is also currently available in one of Epidiah Ravachol’s terrific Epimas bundles, along with some other amazing games that I am honored to be alongside: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/epimas/

Love and thanks to you all! It’s great to have gotten another game product to this point.

Johnstone Metzger just did planar campaigns a huge favor by releasing an entire book on how to create custom DW playbooks by mixing and matching different character backgrounds. I’m so excited about this huge tome of awesomeness!

If you like Dungeon World, Johnstone Metzger has ripped all the playbooks apart and provided guidelines for assembling them back together into custom playbooks of all sorts. A very, very cool idea that provides an excellent foundation for making playbooks for DW (and, really, other AW hacks as well). It’s a tome of a book at 526 pages, but it’s highly recommended. Plus, awesome cover by Nate Marcel!

Crap.

Crap.

Crap. I finally picked up the Numenera PDFs through the current Bundle of Holding and obviously the first thing my brain did was try to convert everything to Dungeon World. Please tell me someone’s done this already, right? I can tell my brain to chill out and stop thinking about this? I searched through the community archives, but didn’t see discussion of any conversion. Seems like it should be pretty straightforward, right? Just three playbooks to adapt and the fiction-first nature of DW makes the moves seem much simpler to write, yeah?

So I’m doing the Planarch analog for superhero games as a supplement for the upcoming Worlds in Peril, currently down to its last 60 hours on Kickstarter (assuming it funds at that level). Thought it might be interesting to some folks here. Could probably also use it in a genre-mashup to play superheroes in Dis, which would be nuts.

To go with the previously published picture:

PERILOUS WORLDS: Renegade Superheroes in a World Gone Mad is a mini-supplement for Worlds in Peril by J. Walton that provides two things: (1) a streamlined ruleset for quick pick-up-and-play superhero one-shots and (2) guidelines for playing superheroes in a variety of different settings outside of urban heroics, inspired in part by the author’s unpublished work on the Age of Apocalypse sourcebooks for Marvel Heroic Roleplaying.

On an alien planet, in a magical land, in a zombie apocalypse, in an alternate reality, in a far-future dystopia, or if supervillains take over… the world’s heroes still rise. How are they different and what do they fight for in a world gone mad?

These two portions of the supplement can be used together or the guide to alternate superhero settings can be injected directly into your ongoing Worlds in Peril game.

Unlocked for all backers (in PDF form) at $21,000.

Yeah, essentially Perilous Worlds : Worlds in Peril :: Planarch Codex : Dungeon World. It takes the standard superhero premise and complicates it to do stories in the vein of the Age of Apocalypse, Planet Hulk, 2099, Days of Future Past, the Guardian of the Galaxy, the Legion of Superheroes, Kingdom Come, the Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Avengers Forever, Exiles, What If?, etc.
