For one-shots, I tend to prefill the stats of the character-sheets. That saves a lot of prep time for the new players, and gives a nice balance where the fighter can´t outsmart the bard. In the v 2.2 sheets, the immolator became an official class, so I want to fill it out as well. How ever, I can´t find a single most important (+2) stat. I mean it´s DEX for thief, STR for fighter etc.

But the Immolator has custom moves using CON and WIS, and can use INT as STR or DEX. So basicly 3 important stats. Where would the the +2 be most appropriate as a result of fiction (not power palying)?

– prefer direct speech and ACT the conversation, i.e. give away information in small portions, like in a natural conversation? E.g. “Hello, my name is Todd, waht´s up?”

– DESCRIBE the conversation in indirect speech and give all the informations that the player will get from this NPC for free? E.g. “He tells you that his name is Todd, he has seen 3 buglars this morning…”

I prepare a custom move for a city under siege with soldiers left, but broken chain of command. Input welcome!

**Give an order:**

If you have earned the respect of the solders or the one they vowed fidelity to, and there is no effective chain of command, and you attempt to give an order, roll+CHA.

Gain +1 if the order does not seem to be particulary dangerous.

On a 10+, choose 1. On 7-9, choose 2.

– They will run away when facing imminent death.

– They expect you to protect them.

– They move very slow and act extremly cautious.

6-: They will deny your order, completely or partially.

Soldiers might accept minor tasks (bring message, answer question etc.) without roll, unless they consider you a foe. GMs call.

Giving players a say in the 6- results. Do you?

I occasionally try to go “ok, so you failed your shot. What else did go wrong?” It depends on the players (and I sure have a veto), but usually the results are fine.  Like “So I missed, and the arrow hit… the torch, so we are all in dark now?”

I found that players who occasionally depict their own failures will more generously accept when I make a harsh move on them.

How to award players who embrace the downsides of the character they display?

How to award players who embrace the downsides of the character they display?

How to award players who embrace the downsides of the character they display? Like when a dwarf gets drunken right before an epic fight,  or a kleptomanic thief refuses to flee from a sinking ship full of gold?

I need to deal the downsides, that´s the point, but I want to give them some award for being authentic and making a better game. Here are my ideas:

1) Fate-Points or alike. I dislike the idea because the usage of those point is in no plausible fictional way related to they earning.

2) Gaining XP. I dislike the idea of characters acting stupid just to level.

3) A custom move.

When you act on your very nature and embrace all the consequences, roll+nothing. On a hit, the immediate result is somewhat under controll. On a 10+, you get to shine.

That´s a very vague definition to be polished, but I picture a drunken dwarf with his warhammer stumbling throu the frontlines, beheading orks without even noticing the danger.

What do you think? How do you handle that?

As a DW GM, should a care to read anything from the Apokalypse World rules or sheets?
