Here’s a question about spell availability (again) for folks who have run Freebooters.  I was talking with one of the players in my campaign after our game last night who plays a magic user.  His character is now 3rd level, and he has the capacity to memorize 4 spells at once, but still only has the basic 2 spells he started with.  I put some spells he could learn in a couple of the dungeons they have explored so far, but I put them in the hardest parts of the dungeons and the PCs have decided to wait and tackle those areas later when they are more powerful.  the player wasn’t unhappy, but felt a little left behind since he had this wasted capacity for his character.  Any ideas?  I’m tempted to make new spells a little more available to keep pace with his growing ability to use them, but I don’t want to overpower the MUs in the campaign over the other characters.  he did get a minor magic item in the game (once he figures out what it does), so he’ll have another magical toy to play with, but I certainly sympathize with his desire to learn some actual new spells.

We’ve decided to go full-on “West Marches” for our Freebooters campaign, so I’ve created a G+ community to keep things organized.  It’s primarily for local players to post to, but I thought that some folks here might enjoy following along and seeing how we work things.  Thanks to Jason Lutes for the Freebooters and Perilous Wilds rules which make this style of game so much easier!

I got to run Freebooters for the first time last night, and posted an actual play of the session on RPGNet.  Thanks to Amber LeClaire , Jeremy Kush , and Tabitha Kush for playing!

A couple of quick Freebooters rules questions.

A couple of quick Freebooters rules questions.

A couple of quick Freebooters rules questions.

1) I’m assuming that for the fighter’s Signature Weapon and the Thief’s Tricks of the Trade starting moves, the player can opt to take an additional weapon/trick in place of an advanced move any time they reach an odd numbered level. Is that true?

2) This one’s not really a rules question, but I see that the Magic User has a move to inscribe a new spell into their spell book.  Any suggestions on how often often the Magic User should get access to new spells to copy?

I just did character generation for a planned Freebooters game this past weekend.  I used the playbooks form the most recent update (7-6-15), and I noticed that the space to write in your virtues and vices seems to be missing from all of the playbooks.  Is that a conscious choice, an error, or a problem on my end?

I haven’t checked in for a while (trying not to get too excited about the release too soon), but I was wondering if the 7-6-15 versions of the Freebooters playbooks were the most recent versions?  I might have a chance to run it for some folks new to RPGs, and wanted to have the most recent versions if possible.

I just got a copy of Yoon-suin, which is a pretty amazing Asian influenced, randomly generated OSR setting book, and I was wondering if anyone had tried (or even thought about) using it with Freebooters?  I realize both items are very new, so its probably a long shot, but I think the two books would mesh together really well.

I’m about to launch a DW campaign using the Innistrad setting from Magic: The Gathering.  The look of the setting is 18th c., and I’d like to introduce black powder weapons (pistols, muskets) to the game.  Has anyone done a write-up of early gunpowder weapons for DW?  It seems pretty straight forward, but I wanted to see what other people had done with the idea (I’d probably go with some new tags like reload, loud, and +1 damage).

I wanted to talk a little bit about Dungeon World as a first RPG.  I’ve now used DW to introduce half a dozen new people to tabletop RPGs, with great success.  One of those new players just emailed me to say how much fun she had, and how, after playing some other games, she realizes how awesome DW was as her first experience with a RPG.  My current group consists of 3 brand new folks and 2 who haven’t played RPGs for 15 years or so.  We’ve been playing a few short runs (DW, tremulus, a weird Barbarians of Lemuris/DW hybrid), but they voted last week to return to DW for a long campaign, which I think speaks to how much they enjoy the game.

So, what are other people’s experiences introducing new folks to our hobby using DW?

I’m going to be starting a new Dungeon World campaign next week.  For some reason, some of my players are wary of just starting with character generation and developing the setting during play, so they’ve requested that we play a session of Microscope to lay out the big picture of the world before starting the campaign.  I know some other folks have done this before, and was looking for any advice or pitfalls to be wary of.  So, tell me how your Microscope to DW experience went.
