Werecreature – Compendium class

Cursed

When you’ve been severely wounded by a werecreature, you may take this move the next time you level up. You are now possessed by the spirit of the same creature that bit you, and branded a monster by the common folk, who somehow always manager to guess your true nature.

Whenever one of the following turning condition happens, you must roll +WIS to resist the beast (roll only once a day for each condition) :

ø It’s a full moon

ø You see blood spilled

ø You’re alone in the wilderness

ø You’re in the presence of wild animals

On 10+, you resist the beast. Take +1 forward to roll again.

On 7-9, you turn but retain control. Hold 2.

On 6-, you turn and the beast takes over.

When in beast form, you cannot talk, handle items or perform magic. You also lose your equipment, weapons and armour. However, you can make appropriate animal moves by spending 1.

When you have zero left, the beast takes over. All humanoid intelligence and memory melts away into the animal’s consciousness. The GM can veto your actions if she thinks they aren’t instinctive enough. You will soon fall into a deep slumber from which you’ll rise in your original form.

If you have Cursed the following moves count as class moves for you.

Self-control

A turning condition of your choice doesn’t trigger the Cursed move anymore.

Greater self-control

Another turning condition of your choice doesn’t trigger the Cursed move anymore.

Skinchanger

By sheer strength of will, you can attempt to turn into your beastly form. Roll +WIS

On 10+, you turn and retain control. Hold 3.

On 7-9, you turn and retain control. Hold 1.

On 6-, you turn but the beast takes over immediately.

Spend 1 to make an appropriate animal move. When you have zero left, the beast takes over as per Cursed.

Senses of the wild

When you Discern Realities, you can ask the following questions :

ø What kind of creature is this?

ø Where did it go?

Impervious

Normal weapons can’t kill you anymore. When you reach 0 hp and none of the damage you’ve sustained came from silver weapons or magical sources (including enchanted weapons), you don’t make a Last Breath move. You will awake several hours later with 1 hp.

On the other hand, silver and enchanted weapons always deal +1 damage to you.

Regeneration

Required: Impervious

You regain 1 hp every hour, provided the damage didn’t come from silver or magical weapons.

I wrote this as an intro for my Keep on the Borderlands, 30 years later game. The idea is to mix dungeonverse and 1980s culture, with a bit of Adventure Time thrown in just because.

“I started my adventuring career in 1953. We had it easy then, son: dark immortals raising armies far in the East, greedy thieves guilds taking over merchant towns, goblins and dragons and dark elves. Nothing we couldn’t handle. Nowadays, it’s all different, shades of grey as they say. I just call it a right mess.

The frontier, the last outpost. We used to call this place the Keep on the Bordelands. My castle. My pride. Now all I own is a four-year lease on this crummy little motel. And every morning when I wake up, I can see the ruins of my old towers, up there on the hill. Civilisation, we’ve seen plenty of it here. Look at this town, this overgrown highway. They were all sparkling new twenty-five years ago. The monster tribes in the Caves of Chaos had been beaten into submission by people like me and you. The guilds made them sign their peace treaty and then left. The education, the employment they promised? Turns out it was all for the settlers they moved into their shiny little villages. Crafty cats, those guildmasters.

They ran the show here for a good while. They pushed the frontier far to the north and east, making us feel like we were a real part of the Federated Realms. But then, the great cities started to have problems of their own. We heard stories of Titans raised from the sea, drowning the entire coast. Some kind of magical plague as well. And a couple of stars falling on the Wizards’ conclave. Tough stuff, for sure. I understand they couldn’t support us as well as they used to.

It was a hard time, but we made it through the dark, lonely years, to this new age. The frontier is everywhere now: civilisation and wilderness all tangled up, from the palaces of the guildmasters to our suburban vales. Even uninhabited, remote areas have decaying outposts, remnants of this crazy expansion. Their own catastrophes now dealt with, some guilds are taking an interest in us again. What a surprise.

Mindless, the new guys from the Underworld. They showed up here with the deed to the Keep and a construction crew. I told the slimy tentacle-faces they could have it! Make an adventuring center of it if that’s what they wanted. I was leaving these cursed lands!

But I didn’t. Somehow, I couldn’t part from my old keep. I opened this place with the gold I had stashed for my old age and saw the town come alive again. People are coming back, craftsmen and traders, families, lured by the promise of a newfound prosperity. In the Caves, the clans have been showing their ugly snouts. The orcs tribes are fighting over some magical trinket again, bugbears are working on the construction site, and I hear kobolds are preying on travellers stupid enough to wander off the highway. All of a sudden, the old days are back.

It’s 1983 and the Keep on the Borderlands is opening for business.”

A question to the Dungeon Wise: is there a repository of all compendium classes somewhere?

The wizard in my game last night was briefly possessed by a dying lizardman after he botched a Charm Person spell, and I’m looking for a class along the lines of Soulmaster / Haunted / Possessed by ghosts.

If any of you understand French, we say a lot of good things about both versions of Dungeon World in this podcast.

I’m running my first DW session tonight.

I’m running my first DW session tonight. I’ll be starting with a written dungeon (The Bloodstone Idol, which is included in the French box) and I have some ideas for the setting (The Keep on the Borderlands, 30 years later).

But I don’t want to rob the players of their narrative rights and I’ll need some kind of hard rule to prevent me from doing so. Yeah, I tend to sit at the frustrated writer end of the GM spectrum, but I’m working on it 😉

So this is why I’m going to give worldbuilding responsabilities to each player:

*The Fighter has a say on everything connected to armed conflict, secular law and the feudal system.

*The Wizard is in charge of magic and the supernatural, as well as ancient history.

*The Cleric answers questions about religious power, dogma, cults and sects, etc.

*The Thief is the underworld and trade consultant. He’ll advise me on crime, guilds and legitimate commerce.

Has anybody done something of the sort?

I’ve half a mind to buy this, and to adapt it to Dungeon World.
