One of my resources for WoD is a collection of old (2012) forum posts (?) from the story games codex – see photo.

Some of this makes reference to a 1981 version of WoD vs the 1979 version that I have. Can anyone shed any light on what that ‘81 version? Or better yet where to get it?

  1. World of Dungeons was a de-make, of sorts by John Harper about what it would be like to take the underpinnings of DW and strip them back to the absolute basics. It leaves a lot of things unsaid (what is HP? What happens when you run out of it?) that you are supposed to fill in at the table. That being said, it is also a bit of a joke about what old DnD was like and how it left a lot up to the players. This is a long way to say that it was created as part of the DW kickstarter. I did not actually exist in the 70’s and 80’s and all of that was a bit of fun on the part of those involved. There is no ’79 or ’81 version. It’s a new construct of our modern era.

  2. Thanks Dylan, I got that it was super minimalist and tongue firmly planted in cheek. I really dig that vibe.

I should have been more clear were the basic 3 pages expanded on with another “expert” edition?

I can see there are lots of hacks and inspiration others have take from this.

  3. Perhaps someone who is more knowledgeable than myself can point you towards what others have done with this. There are many many hacks and expansions but there is no offical expert, advanced, or otherwise versions.

That being said, the game as written will get you to reproduce the intended experience. After a session or 5 you’ll have something like “Hack and Slash” and “Volley” and maybe even “make camp.” These will capytue the flavor of how you run the game. Playing WODU is building the basic units of play. The document is a magic trick. It makes the complicated appear seamless.

Do not be afraid. Lean into the ambiguity. Try it out and trust your instincts and your fellow players. It’s hard because it leaves so much unanswered, but that is a feature not a bug.
