Thought this video would be interesting because even though it’s not virtual, Dungeon World does cater to Power Fantasy Gaming. I think it’s a good idea to have at least a little self examination of our character or their world, even in a one shot.

  1. Lu Quade It’s good that they never used real world examples. But since a lot of fighting games involve a lot of violence and death, it’s good to ask yourself if it’s actually for the greater good or protection of yourself/others. If we examine our selves in game. We might examine ourselves in real life.

  2. Yeah. I definitely think its good to think about whether violence is justified – and very often do so in the games I run and play. It is exactly that idea of greater good that I find very problematic.

Also: it did use the real world example of the the video creator’s soldier friend justifying his actions by considering the reasons for the conflict. I guess I just assumed that the soldier is from the US and it’s hard to justify any of their recent conflicts on greater good grounds (im Australian btw and we’ve totally helped out with that shit too).

  3. Lu Quade I agree that the U.S. involvement is a giant mess we never should have created. But the real tragedy is that most of these soldiers are trapped in this endless war and can’t get out easily. They didn’t choose to lengthen the war or extend it’s boundaries. That is is the fault of higher powers in the military and the past Presidents (Bush started the war, Obama continued it, and Trump hasn’t ended the war either).

World leaders perpetuating war at the people’s expense. Another tragic real life situation that can show up in games.

  4. Yep. It would be pretty hard to be a soldier involved in those conflicts: and im sure a lot of them are having very different experiences to what they imagined when they signed up. It’s not the only “real tragedy” though – all the civilian deaths seem pretty tragic too! Anyway. Sorry to hijack your post. I very much appreciate the spirit you shared the video in, and think the discussion you wanted to start is a great one! (also not trying to get the last word I’m happy to continue the discussion – just trying to use my manners in your post!). Peace! 🙂
