Shifter

Shifter

Shifter

When you drink the blood of an animal, you may transform yourself into its likeness leaving behind your possessions. You have abilities and can perform tasks associated with the form.

When you attempt to revert to your original form, Roll+WIS-(1 per “moment” in the form).

10+ You revert to normal.

7-9 You revert to normal, but have a lingering aspect of the animal which may express itself at inopportune times.

6- You are stuck as the animal till you fully rest.

  1. That’s really cool!!! Although I feel the – (1 per “moment”…) is a bit clunky. Is there a way to increase a “Form-Time” hold (or something) while you’re in the form, and then the revert roll would be roll + WIS – FormTime. (Something like that, I don’t especially like “FormTime” either, but it illustrates the point).

  2. When you drink… hold 3 Instinct. (Maybe more, or ability to choose amount, with Advanced Moves)

When you perform a form ability, spend 1 Instinct.

    When you revert… Roll+WIS-Instinct.

  3. I like that David Perry, and you could flip it so that the more animal things you do the harder it is to revert because the animal instinct takes over.

When you drink gain 1 Instinct and when you perform a form ability gain 1 instinct.

Revert = roll + WIS – Instinct. And maybe alter 6- to You are stuck in animal form and may not attempt to revert again. When you rest for a short period of time you awaken in your normal form.

  4. On a 6-, at the next sunset (or sunrise for nocturnal creatures), you leave to find a resting place suitable to your form, and awaken in your normal form at the subsequent sunrise/sunset.

  5. I like it, although the +WIS-(whatever) feels a bit convoluted.

    How about:

When you drink, hold Instinct equal to your WIS.

When you perform a form move, spend 1 Instinct. Instinct can become negative.

    When you revert, roll +Instinct.

Edit: Although since it’s actually the animal’s instincts which are taking over as you spend the hold, perhaps call it “Control” or “Rationality” or something instead.

  6. I like where Robert Rendell’s idea is going. I’d probably rename Instinct to Humanity, though.

When you drink… hold Humanity equal to your WIS.

When you perform a form move, lose 1 Humanity (minimum of -3).

    When you revert, roll +Humanity.

  7. Jeremy Strandberg you beat me to it 🙂 I thought about suggesting calling the hold “Humanity” in the edit, but then though that the creature using the move might be something non-Human.

  8. I really like the design space of “hold [variable] equal to your [statistic or STAT]”, and I’ve already used it to rework a fear-based mechanic for Issue 3 of Session Zero.

When you enter the Dark Forest, hold Composure equal to your wisdom…

But at some point I also plan to use When you sit down to drink in XYZ Tavern, hold Sobriety equal to your CON…

It adds a new variable that can be increased or decreased that you can use for moves and even Defy Danger with when done properly!
