Thought you might like to check in on the developing map from our random emergent storytelling, GM-less Perilous/Freebooters game! The four main characters are each now level 8! They’ve discovered that the source of the blight is a Necrotic dragon living deep beneath Kinlye… I’ll post more on the stories after this weekend’s session.

  1. Looks cool! How many sessions has your campaign been going on for? Looks like a very mature map, especially if they’ve been to or at least passed by everything on it.

  2. @slurms, I would estimate that we’ve played about 25 sessions. Nothing exists on this map unless it has directly come in to play. We’re using “The Perilous Wild” and with very few exceptions, everything you see here exists because it was a DISCOVERY or a DANGER.

  3. Yochai Gal, the essence of our GM-less system is that we use numbered lists to generate random moves and outcomes. Those lists include, “GM Moves”, “Hard Choices, Worse Outcomes”, “Messy & Forceful”, “Monsters”, “Treasure”, and of course, everything in “The Perilous Wild”.

We also have a great system for resolving questions where each of the four people at the table contributes a feasible answer and we then roll a d4.

For example, “How does the discovery of a secret cache of weapons relate to an existing plot line, story, or mystery?”

    1. The Kobolds are making “payments” to the Thieves Guild of Hind in exchange for information they can use as leverage against their cruel and vicious trading partner Kelelia.

    2. A mercenary company hid their spare weapons to free up room in a wagon needed to carry off the gold of a giant they slew in the nearby wilds.

    3. The forces of Ightai are stashing weapons for a secret attack as part of their plot against the duke and his supporters.

    4. A trader bound for the Caravanseri hid her wares here when a scout reported that a troop of bandits were fast approaching. She never returned to reclaim them…

These outcomes are recorded and used to create and extend a story map. In fact, we the players all know many things that our characters do NOT, but this doesn’t make anything any less fun. In fact, working out how we can reveal secrets to our characters is half the fun. Moves like PERCEIVE and ESTABLISH essentially give us free reign as a group to craft raw fiction in consensus.

Maybe I’ll record or broadcast a session someday!
