Kokiriko Lamp

The Kokiriko Lamp is made out of wrought iron twisted and curled into delicate shapes. It appears mundane, but it was forged with dragonfire and magic. At will, the user can absorb large amounts of flames into the chamber of the lamp and keep it there until it dies down on its own. A campfire or the light of several torches can be compressed into a small calm flame while the fire of burning buildings can be compressed into a raging firestorm the size of a fist. But no matter how much or little was absorbed, the user can’t do it again until after they expel everything in a directed blast of fire, or will it to fade slowly until it’s extinguished.

The lamp is a sacred artifact of the Kokiriko, simple humanoids with thin bodies of bark and wood. They were originally gifted the lamp to protect themselves and their forest home from fires. These stick figures half the size of a human only speak with clicks and whispery vowels in a language sounding a bit like their own name. And what emotions their wooden faces and large hollow eyes don’t show, they express with stilted and exaggerated gestures. They are hard to spot amongst the trees and in an emergency they can drain their own lifeforce to grow long vines and large leaves out of their bodies, but they are also seriously weakened by it.

The Kokiriko and their artifact were improvised in a session with my 10 year old player. I really enjoyed that session and the way the lamp came out so I thought I’d share the concept. This is exactly the way it appeared in the game and it worked for us, but I’m sure it could be improved and given custom moves or whatnot.

He used the lamp to fight a corrupted dragon in two phases, first in the tunnels of some old ruins and a large room resembling a theatre with pillars and balconies on different levels where he could use his rock shaping magic. And then later up in the sky above the forest flying on his large bird. (totally a Loftwing) After defeating and releasing the dragon from its corruption, he gave the lamp back to the Kokirikos, and true to the tradition of our campaigns we had a Kokiriko Festival montage.
