I would love to see more examples of ideas for character Flags/Buttons—i.e. Rob Donoghue’s idea to replace Bonds here: http://walkingmind.evilhat.com/2015/09/07/from-bonds-to-flags/

What sorts of flags have you seen in play, thought of yourself, or would enjoy seeing in play? Bonus points if a few flags string together to make a character development arc.

  1. I created a sample list of these for a PbtA game I’d been working on for several years. (If you plagiarize me commercially, please be nice about it)

    — Abused: Get angry at someone. I will get upset with you for doing so.

    — Bookworm: Take me to a bookstore or library. I will not leave until it closes, even if I should.

    — Daring: Let me keep you from going ahead into danger so I can go first instead.

    — Devout: Take me to a place of worship that matches my beliefs. Then mock or attack it. I will defend it.

    — Drinker: Take me to a place that has beer or wine. I will buy or take a drink, even if I should not.

    — Glutton: Offer me food. I will eat it even if I should not.

    — Joker: Ask me to tell a joke. I will tell you two.

    — Kind: Let me help you when you are in trouble. I will help you even if I get hurt doing so.

    — Lazy: Ask me to do something tiring. I will say no.

    — Leader: Let me decide what the group will do, but attack or mock my choice later.

    — Liar: Believe and act on a lie I told you.

    — Noble: Offer me an easy answer to a problem that betrays my beliefs or values. I will refuse it.

    — Party beast: Take me to a party. I will not leave it until I am forced to go.

    — Phobia (choose one): Expose me to what I fear or dislike to an extreme. I will try to escape it or refuse to go near it.

    — Prankster: Be fooled by a trick I played on you in front of others.

    — Outsider: Reject my help because I am not like others. I will get mad.

    — Proud: Offer me help I need. I will refuse it, even if I should not.

    — Rival: Do something I am good at and I will try to do it better than you, even if I get hurt doing so.

    — Trusting: Ask me to trust you and I will believe you even if you lie.

    — Watchful: Someone hurts you or tries to do so in my presence. I will protect you from that person, even if I get hurt doing so.

  2. John Rieping Those are awesome! That’s just the kind of thing I’m looking for. (BTW I only plan to use these ideas to inspire my local group players)
