After my DURATION tweak for the Mage, I’ve begun exploring how to let clerics to spend Favor to bestow a blessing or inflict a curse that lasts longer and/or affects more than one person or object:

When you call upon your Deity to empower, protect, hinder, or afflict someone or something, explain how this divine intervention is pursuant to your faith and roll+PRI:

(+) The effect is granted and has duration 3.

(=) The effect is granted and has duration 1.

Before you roll, you may spend favor 1-for-1 to add Duration or Recipients of the blessing or curse. Any Favor spent on additional Duration or Recipients is regained only when the blessing or curse ends. You may permanently burn 1 point

of your Prime Ability to make a curse permanent.

  1. Let me know if you want to share a draft of that for me to take for a spin. I’m playing a 4th level cleric myself in a one of my weekly games of FoTF. My cleric is already pretty non-orthodox. Would be fin to compare and swap comments. One thing I’m definitely planning on working on is adding a little bit more structure and scaling to Bless/Curse.

  2. Working with some of your phrasing and the idea about refreshing favor in a temple, this is what I have so far:

    DISCIPLE

You are a vessel of divine will, charged with promoting and defending your faith. Your deity has the same Alignment as you, and a particular domain–the part of existence over which they hold sway (darkness, war, love, the moon, plant life, etc.). Name your deity and write down their domain. Then, write 1 tenet by which adherents of your faith are expected to abide (“Always help those in need,” “Destroy all enemies of the faith,” etc.).

Favor represents your current standing in the eyes of your deity. The maximum favor you may hold at any time is equal to your current level +WIS (minimum of 1). You start play with maximum favor.

When you make any roll that falls within the domain of your deity, you may spend favor before you roll the dice to increase the result by +1 for each point of favor spent.

    Deity _____ Domain _____ Tenet _____

    CONVERT

When you convince a nonbeliever to join your faith, gain 1 XP or 1 favor (your choice).

    SACRIFICE

When you make an appropriate offering to your deity, ask the Judge how much favor you gain. 1 favor is roughly equivalent to your current level x10 in silver coins, or your current level x2 in HP. Offerings must be tithed, destroyed, or given away.

    PRAY

When you take the necessary time to commune with your deity, say what that looks like. If you are at a shrine, temple or other place holy to your faith, restore your favor to maximum. If you are elsewhere, roll +WIS: on a 10+, your prayers are heard–gain favor equal to your current level; on a 7-9, gain 1 favor.

    INVOKE

When you call upon your Deity to empower, protect, hinder, or afflict someone or something, say what you want to have happen and how it falls within your deity’s domain. Then, ask the Judge to assign your request hubris from 1 (rote) to 6 (miraculous), and roll -hubris: on a 10+, your request is granted with duration 3, and may be made permanent if you choose to perma-burn 1 Charisma per point of hubris; on a 7-9, your request is granted with duration 1, but your deity demands proof of devotion–the Judge chooses 1 from the list below.

    # Exemplify: take -1 ongoing to Pray and Invoke until you satisfy your tenet.

    # Atone: take -1 ongoing to Pray and Invoke until you gain at least 1 favor.

    # Evangelize: take -1 ongoing to Pray and Invoke until you Convert a nonbeliever.

    # Endure: burn 1d4 points of an ability of the Judge’s choice

    # Redeem: you may not Invoke again until you complete a trial of the Judge’s choosing.

    # Suffer: perma-burn 1 point of an ability of the Judge’s choice

  3. I tried some of this out last night. I think “on a 10+, your prayers are heard–gain favor equal to your current level” is a great step in the right direction and exactly one of the ideas I was considering. I’ll share more comments when I can more clearly formulate the thoughts.
