I’m sure this has come up before (because how could it not) but if a Paladin is getting a healing boost from something (like the cleric spell Sanctuary or the paladin move Hospitaller) and he does Lay on Hands and gets 7-9, does the bonus healing also transfer as damage?

  1. well, that’s basically what the player asked me, as GM, when he was considering taking that move and that spell. i can see it going both ways… it feels more like a mechanical question than a “world” question to me, personally. and i can see arguments for it either way. initially my gut, just from reading Lay on Hands, was that it would carry over, but I’m starting to lean the other way, as it seems maybe overly harsh if so, possibly too risky/dangerous, and like it would push him away from those moves, which doesn’t seem like fun to me.

  2. Reframe your thinking: the damage isn’t harsh, it’s not a punishment.

It’s a sign that the paladin is willing to take on the injuries and pains of others to bring them healing.

If being a bloody martyr is integral to a specific The Paladin in this specific instance of DW, then hell yeah the extra healing applies as damage. And make those scenes really show this decision. This makes it more fun for the players.

If The Paladin is not a martyr, and Lay on Hands is more utility to this player than thematic, the extra damage likely would apply, because it is less fun to take that utility option away by making it to costly.

So I agree with the others – ask the player what makes sense for this paladin, and run with it. But be clear that you’re not going to hold every other The Paladin in other games of DW (or maybe in this same game, if the current paladin dies from over healing his party! ) to that same rule.

  3. I’m really not interested in people telling me I’m thinking about it wrong, thanks.

All I want here is to know what, if anything, is correct BTB. If there’s never been an “official” clarification on this, I’m plenty capable of making the decision in tandem with my friends at the table.
