Is this too much for a custom move? I figure it would make a great advanced move for magic users who have gone to the dark side. #DungeonWorldCC

Blood magic

When you cast a spell and spill some blood, you can roll any number of 1d4 and take that much damage. Each roll allows you to choose one of the following:

-Increase damage by 1d4

-Piercing +3

-Choose an additional target within range

-Double it’s duration (doesn’t work for instantaneous spells)

-Double it’s range

  1. If you’re trying to simulate falling to the dark side i’ll check Urban Shadows corruption moves.

    For example.

When you imbue your magic with the dark powers roll +INT (instead of rolling cast spell as usual).

On a 10+ you cast your spell as usual and get 3 holds.

    On a 7-9 you choose:

    – cast your spell, gain 1 hold and 1 corruption.

    – cast your spell but remove it from your memory until you study again.

    – cast your spell but offend your dark patron. -1 ongoing when casting spells until you atune.

On a fail mark corruption and the Master may make a move against you.

Use a hold to add this effects to your spell and receive 1 damage.

    -Increase damage by 1d4

    -Piercing +3

-Choose an additional target within range

-Double it’s duration (doesn’t work for instantaneous spells)

    -Double it’s range

    You start with corruption 0.

Each time you reach 5 corruption erase all your corruption and chose a dark gift.

Your 5th dark gift will condemn you and tie you to the darkness.

    Dark gifts:

    – gain corruption to increase spell damage by 1d6

    – gain corruption to make your spell armor piercing.

    – etc…

Just some ideas that need more thinking 😉

  2. I think the move works fine. It’s just not very flavorful. There’s no fiction in the trigger that mentions anything about blood. I would spice that up so that anyone reading the move instantly gets it’s about blood magic.

  3. Chris Stone-Bush I think it could with something as simple as “when you cast a spell and spill some blood

Also, it would be good to specify that the damage taken ignores armor, IMO.

  4. All fantastic points, thank-you. I’ll be sure to flavor it up. And I like the dark gifts. That would definitely add a level of commitment to the dark
