Hey folks!

Hey folks!

Hey folks! I’m in the process of whipping together a hexcrawl ish campaign with some friends who are nearly impossible to schedule a regular game with, so I want to run it kinda open table style. I once saw a “return to town” sort of custom move that was meant for bringing the players back to the session starting location at the end of session and figuring out some mishaps they suffer along the way but I can’t find it anymore. Anybody recall it or something like it?

  1. Are you thinking about “outstanding warrants”?

    Outstanding Warrants

When you return to a civilized place in which you’ve caused trouble before, roll+Cha. On a hit, word has spread of your deeds and everyone recognizes you. On a 7–9, that, and, the GM chooses a complication:

    • The local constabulary has a warrant out for your arrest

    • Someone has put a price on your head

    • Someone important to you has been put in a bad spot as a result of your actions

  2. I haven’t seen one before, but what the heck, here’s a stab.  When you are still in a dangerous place at the end of session, roll +your best attribute.  On a 10+, you make it back in good order.  On a 7–9, you have a problem.  Pick one:

    * You get lost. Stagger into town at the beginning of next session with no time to heal or train up.

    * To get past an obstacle, you use up or lose a piece of gear or treasure (DM says what).

The trigger is phrased the way it is to encourage players to get out of the dungeon on their own, and not rely on this move if they don’t have to.

  3. Vincent Baker’s Apocalypse World (from which DW was created) has a section called Catching Up Setting Up giving examples of what have come to be known as ‘Love Letters’  Here’s one of them:

    Dear Vega, please roll+hard. On a 10+, choose 1. On a 7–9, choose 2:

Rolfball’s people have sprung him, inflicting some casualties.

the 1st-comers in your marketplace aren’t taking the best spots. They’re saving them for people Kettle likes. Everybody wants to be someone Kettle likes.

Your newest steady, Cola, was just murdered in your rooms.

On a miss, all 3, ha ha.

    Love and kisses, your MC

  4. colin roald , that is a great move, and very close to what I recalled. I might massage it a bit to fit.

Michael D , I’ll have to check that out. Definite strong potential!

Thanks for the great timely responses everybody! I got lots to work with here. I’ll post whatever I settle on.

  5. Taking a look at the Joe Banner post recommended by Michael D , I think a combination is in order- I’ll be employing Love Letters that are much in keeping with the spirit outlined in colin roald ‘s great suggested custom move. As such they’ll be a bit different each time. Once I get this baby rolling I’ll post some examples! Thanks again for the help guys. Y’all rock.
