Hi I need some help with a fun and cool move/moves for a magic item I got for my group, if any of you could chime in – would be great!

My group, a Fighter, Barbarian, Ranger and Mage, investigating a village where the population has been enslaved by Dark forces, and trapped down in their own mine, where the Dark forces makes them dig up a Shadowy Evil Crystal. Woooo, scary.

My group entered a barricaded church and found a group of bodies in front of an altar. No marks or anything on the bodies, a Discern Reality move made clear that their “death” was very weird and unnatural.

They found an amulet on one of the bodies, which the Fighter took “care of”.

I was thinking the amulet should contain the souls of the dead bodies – the elders of the village – in an attempt to save themselves.

The thing is the group, more like the Mage “accidentally”, burned the church down, with the bodies still in it.

I’d like it to be funny when they discover what the amulet is and what it contains, but I can’t come up with any fun and cool moves.

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

  1. When you put on the amulet of 100 souls, roll CHA as you try to retain your sense of self.

On a 10+: A soul takes over your mouth for a minute. The group can ask it one question and it will answer honestly before going dormant.

On a 7-9: A soul takes over your whole body for a moment. It will lead you towards the nearest enemy it wants destroyed.

  2. 1) The amulet is actually a portal to another plane/dreamlands/whatever. If the party needs something from the villagers, they will need to pass through it, and deal with being spirits only on the other side

    2) The amulet is actually just a temporary holding place for the villagers souls. When something gets killed nearby, one of the souls in the amulet will come out and try to possess it. If the body is a monster, they might not be happy with the results.

Maybe they work with the party to try to help the other trapped folk. Maybe they try to organize things so that the next deaths are the same species as the original villagers, depending on how desperate / ruthless they are. Maybe they love it, and try to bully the party into getting enough new dragon bodies (or whatever) for everyone

    3) The amulet is a red herring, but now the group has a cloud of ghosts following them around. It starts out with the occasional bad dream, moves to poltergeist stuff, then full haunting as the ghosts gain power. The characters have to figure out how lay the ghosts to rest.

  3. Delos Adamski So simple, yet so brilliant. I love it. Thanks!

Dylan Knight I like the idea of the trapped souls entering wrong bodies, and blaming the characters for it – will work that out as some sort of quest for them. Thanks!
