Can anyone recommend an adventure for one GM and one PC? (Is that even possible?) I’ve been looking through Joe Banner’s adventures and they look really fun, but so far there’s only the two of us in my group who want to give DW a try. One-shots geared to newbie players/GMs would be awesome.

  1. If you want a pre-made adventure, that’s great. The thing is, what I love so much about Dungeon World is that the world is created from your own imagination. You don’t even need to prepare anything because the rules allow for you to do whatever you want and continue the story based on the outcome of the dice rolls. All you need are a pair of imaginative minds!

My first real game was with Aaron Feild , who ran a game 1-on-1 with me to introduce it to me anyways when the other players didn’t show up. I had a blast on my own and the creativity that came with it was so phenomenal. I attribute my love for this system due to the spark that ignited from that game – and I’ve never looked back.

Enjoy your pre-made adventures but, in my opinion, the best adventures will be the ones you create on the spot!

  2. I’d say just start asking questions and making stuff up. Start in the middle of some action (swamp snakes!) and figure it out from there. The only awkward thing about 2 players is the lack of bonds, which you can safely ignore, or establish one or two hirelings to have bonds with. DW adjusts to the party, pretty much automatically, since the GM is not getting more “turns” than the PC. Although a lone PC may want to be more cautious about keeping an escape route open!

If you want some inspiration, Marshall Miller’s Dungeon Starters work for 2 players or any number of players.

I’d actually suggest against more pre-written stuff than that. You’ll find it’s easier to present appropriate threats if you choose on the fly. It’s a real strength of Apocalypse World type games how much input all the players have (including GM) on the kind of story they want to see.

That said, Jason Morningstar’s The Slave Pit of Drazhu adventure is specifically designed for new players, although the monsters as written might be fairly tough for a single PC. Better recruit some fellow slaves to help you out!

  3. If DW is the first *World game, you may want to play in Hangouts or read the Guide ( http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=2a529e23cf15c6baefdeb38464d61f5e&topic=4996.0) first, or even both, if you haven’t already.

That said, while all the Dungeon starters Aaron suggested are full of game ideas, they are written for conciseness, not as a learning tool. The Slave Pit is, and it’s supposed to be played with bunch of non heroic characters, so it would be probably work as a solo adventure.

  4. Thanks for the advice y’all. Both of us who are interested in giving DW a go are really new to RPGs, and neither are particularly creative. The adventure modules y’all publish are really inspiring.
