Does anyone have a good generic illusion move? Something that covers simply creating lifelike images with sounds.

  1. When you create an Illusion out of the fabric of the dreamplane describe what it looks like and roll+DEX.

On a 10+ you create the illusion, no problem

On a 7-9 the illusion is created but something is off about it. The GM will tell you what it is.

    Alternative:

On a 7-9 the illusion is created but choose 1

    – it is partly transparent

    – its colours are all off

    – you don’t get the image right

  2. Awesome! 🙂

I sort of like the idea of selecting senses to affect. But I like Tim’s first 7-9 the most.

Any reason you chose DEX instead of CHA or INT?

  3. You could try a hold-and-spend:

    Illusions!

When you create an illusion of a person or thing, not much larger than a man, roll +INT. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 2. On a miss, hold 1 in addition to whatever the GM tells you.  Spend your hold to have the illusion react to events in a realistic way (holding up a conversation, pretending to deflect an arrow with its shield, etc.).  When you run out of hold, the illusion ends (or gives itself away).

  4. Matthew Miller it was more a “ha! let’s not do a mental stat thing!” in the beginning but especially with that trigger condition it was more about crafting the illusion instead of mentally projecting it somehow. It also opens you up to go into a Thief direction and that is cool with Illusions. Just because it is magic, doesn’t mean it needs to be INT.

  5. Cool. 🙂 So does the actual crafting of the illusion require quick and precise hand gestures, then? It must be less about memorizing complex words and gestures and more about timing and speed. Which gives me a Naruto vibe. 😛

  6. I see what you mean. But since an illusion is crafted by misdirection and stagecraft I would suggest Cha. (I was a stage magician in my very tender youth)

  7. Ever did magic from the dream plane? Also misdirection is a lot about DEX. You use CHA to make people think about something different, but you are not casting better because you are more convincing.

  8. You could argue that the vividness of your illusions is an expression of your passion, creativity, persuassiveness… all associated with CHA more than DEX.

Here’s another way to think about it: if someone else takes this move, who should be better at it?  Base the stat on that.  (In core DW, you’re just looking at Bard and Fighter; these seems more like a Bard thing than a Fighter thing, so I’d lean towards CHA over dex.)

  9. My brain keeps churning on this one… Tim Franzke’s idea of playing an instrument or controlling marionettes keeps sticking with me.  I think if I was going to do it as a hold-and-spend move, I’d use +DEX; holding & spending feels more like the ongoing control & manipulation that implies.  But if I was going to do a single roll to determine how good the illusion was from the get-go, I’d roll +CHA or +INT.

Matthew Miller, I’m interested to see what you decide on!

  10. I went with something simple. 🙂

When you push forth an image from your mind into reality as an illusion, describe what it looks like and roll +CHA.

✴On a 10+ you create the illusion, no problem.

✴On a 7-9 the illusion is created but something is off about it. The GM will tell you what.

  11. Wynand Louw, genius on the brevity and poetry of the senses one.Matthew Miller, how long does the illusion last with your move? And should the illusionist take -1 ongoing to maintain it?

  12. That is a good question. 🙂

I appended a critical hit version of the move where one can maintain the illusion without being anywhere near it… so I should probably append it again to make a note that it lasts as long as you concentrate on it then for only a little while after you aren’t.
