Question: Just some clarification on the rules for preparing spells, when the rule states that you can choose spells whose total levels do not exceed your total levels +1, does this mean that;

1) At Level 4 I could only have a Level 4 spell and a Level 1 spell.

or

2) That I can have 5 spells of any level prepared.

  1. I think so, but it also helps in stopping the spell casters from being overpowered in comparison to other classes. Others will probably have their own opinion about the whole thing.

  2. Casters also do not necessarily lose their spells when they cast them. They also do not require eight hours sleep to re-memorize; it takes much less time in DW.

  3. Both of these are incorrect. 1) There are no 4th level spells listed in the Dungeon World book (at least, not the edition I have). 2) At 4th level, you cannot have five 3rd Level spells prepared, so you cannot have “5 spells of any level prepared.”

  4. I believe the intent of the rule is that you can prepare spells whose total level does not exceed the Wizard’s level+1. So in your instance of a 4th level Wizard, she may have as many as five 1st level spells prepared (1+1+1+1+1=5). Or she may have a 3rd level spell and two 1st level spells prepared (1+1+3=5). I believe those are the only two viable scenarios, because Wizards generally can’t have spells of a level above their own (so a 4th level Wizard can’t have a 5th level spell).

  5. Actually, Robert Poteete, I’m not sure there is a prohibition on a 4th level Wizard casting/prepping 5th level spells. If they can find a 5th level spell there’s nothing I can see in the Wizard Moves that prohibits higher level casting. Clerics are specifically banned, but I don’t see where Wizards are.

  6. Follow up question. If you take the advanced class move to reduce a spell level by one, does a level 3 spell become a level 2 spell, or do you reduce it to a level 1 spell because 2nd level spells don’t exist on the sheet?

  7. I would say that the level 3 spells becomes a level 2 spell, I see no problem in having or creating level 2 spells. Just because the “core” rules don’t include level 2 spells.

  8. I am wondering about this too. Take a 6th level Wizard. They have a hard choice of preparing a 5th level spell and two 1st level, or maybe two 3rd level and a first, or maybe a whole bunch of 1st level spells. While they don’t necessarily lose a spell after casting, they don’t have a lot of variety either.

    Is that a valid concern?

    I had considered changing the prepared levels to level x2 instead of level +1, but I worry that may be going too far.
