Did someone write a move like this already?

Did someone write a move like this already? I don’t have any attribution in my notes but I feel like I got this idea from someone else:

From Beyond

When you summon a monster from beyond this world, say what it’s for, one thing it is, and one thing it’s not. Then roll+INT, and find out what comes through. On a 10+, both. On a 7-9, choose one:

·         It will follow your commands.

·         It’s perfect for the job.

On a miss, it isn’t what you said it is, but it is what you said it’s not.

  1. No, I checked the Reefmonger, that’s henchman-building summoning. I mean specifically the “say what it’s for, one thing it is, and one thing it’s not” bit, which I don’t feel like I’m clever enough to have come up with all on my own.

Actually, it feels a lot like the horror move in Murderous Ghosts, where on a miss you do the exact thing you don’t want to do, so maybe it’s from a non-DW hack, but I thought it might be from an SA-related DW thing.

It’s in some notes I haven’t looked at in a few months, so I don’t remember what I was thinking when I wrote it.

  2. Hm, that’s a good point. I should probably change the obey result to “It fulfills its purpose and leaves.” Not being perfect for the job is supposed to be the 7-9 result you describe.

  3. Jerome Larre It’s supposed to be for someone who is actually good at summoning! Although I suppose adding “no unwanted attention” to the list and making 10+ be choose 2 could make it a bit toothier.

  4. And I choose it will follow my command.

(if I don’t, does it do what it should but not in a way I want or does it just gets summoned and does “something”?

  5. I’m gonna go with “it fulfills its purpose and leaves,” and not “it follows your commands,” actually. You want that one?

(It’s a level 2-5 move, but we can assume you’re level 2 and still use your roll.)

  6. Rad. So I am all-powerful, my purpose is to take over the world even though I am not perfectly suited to this job, and I am not interested in harming the wizard who summoned me. Okay.

The all-powerful Mephistopheles, Grand Regent of Hell, presents to you the corpses of every single man, woman, and child you have ever known, seen, or even heard of in your entire life.

“The world of men is yours and yours alone, my lord,” he purrs obsequiously, bowing before you. “Enjoy it as you will.”

After he disappears in a cloud of sulphurous smoke, you can’t help but recall his exact words. “The world of men,” he said. But what about the monsters?
