I have been helping Something Awful forums user Desty update his Merchant Prince playbook with drives, backgrounds, and a death move (courtesy of my pal David Gunnels)  because I really love this class. Problem is, I’ve hit a roadblock with the backgrounds.

I like the idea of backgrounds called “sheer luck” and “bootstraps” but I have no idea what they’d do. On top of that, I’m always looking for extra sets of eyes to look it over for mistakes and tweaks. I’d also like to fill out the look and name sections a bit more, but ran out of time due to working on Real Life stuff.

I welcome all feedback!

  1. I had a similar idea, though it was for a compendium class. I think the idea of a master merchant would make more sense as a role that is earned, rather than a base class, since I find it difficult to see what this class’ role or motivation is in DW. This was the reason I abandoned my CC as well, I was essentially offering to trade levels for money.

  2. Bootstraps – You have a knack for creating something from nothing, whether you have to beg, borrow or steal, you always have at least +1 capital spent when your Money Talks.

Sheer Luck – The odds are in your favor. Once per session, when you rely on luck rather than planning, it’s as if you rolled a 10+ on a The Price of Success roll.

  3. Hey guys, thanks for the feedback!

James R , I really like those backgrounds!

Mathew Mailer , Yeah, I kind of agree with you. However, I’m not the original creator and don’t want to go changing things too much. I’m just updating the playbook to be a little more modern. I feel like Capitalism, Ho! should be a “choose two” move of some sort, but don’t know what I should add.

  4. Thanks! I’m not sure the backgrounds are balanced, but I think they’re in the ballpark. I definitely agree that a miss in Capital Ho! needs to have more teeth.
