Anyone done anything related to a schools/spheres of magic dealio for cleric or wizard spells?  I think it could be interesting to have players chose a subset of spells to have access to, especially for clerics (wizards already have an in-game spell knowledge limitation).

  1. Yep. In out Westhold campaign, A Mage’s power comes from a Source, and each Source favors a particular theme.

At Character Creation, the following sources are available:

    • The nature of your Source is manifested in your spells and perhaps in yourself. Choose one:

o Avae – The Elf – The mysteries of the Elves are yours to command. Generally only known to Elves.

o Cartal – The Library – You see what others do not, Know what others desire, and uncover the secrets of the Ages.

o Dregha – The Legion – Hammer and Spear. Blood and Spit. The Legion answers the Call.

o Linna – The Castle – Defend with Earth and Stone. Attack with the power of a Siege Engine.

o Praeco – The Traveler – The Pathways of the World and Beyond are open to you.

o Serpens – The Dragon – The powers of the Dragon are yours to command.

o Shurum – The Silent – Silence and Secrets are your tools.

o Ulven – The Wolf – Ice and Snow are your friends….and Wolves.

o Usil – No Icon – Simple, Widely available spells.

Choose your Source. Review the Source sheets for descriptions and details.

There are also some moves tied to Source and a planned Compendium Class or two.

  2. Mages start with Cantrips, Detect Magic, one spell from their Source list and two more spells either from their Source list or Usil (which represents the spells in the DW rule book).

Clerics get Orisons (like in DnD) and all first level spells for their domains – which equals about eight spells. They may also hot swap a Healing spell, Ceremony (campaign custom spell) or Dispel Magic for any memorized spell.

  3. Peter Johansen I’ve seen the Mage, at least; it’s honestly kind of the opposite of what I’m considering.  The idea would be to limit the wizard and priest spellcasting more, but in a flavorful way, as opposed to the Mage, which generalizes it with more “do anything” moves.
