How many 0 level spells can a Wizard know?

How many 0 level spells can a Wizard know?

If a Wizard takes Prodigy for a first level spell can he memorize it nine thousand times?

In my games I ruled that a Wizard (or Cleric) can memorize 3 level zero spells, usually the three that are listed, but if the use Prodigy on a first level spell they must pick one (or more) to memorize that day.

  1. It becomes a cantrip. You prepare each Cantrip once. There was a lenghty discussion about this once but i couldn’t find it. Wanted to reshare it because i thought it would come up.

  2. You can only prepare each 0-level spell once by default: “Prepare your cantrips which never count against your limit.”

It’s the tradeoff: they’re free, but you just get one of each. Making a 1st level spell 0-level makes it free, you always get it, but you only get one preparation (instead of maybe preparing twice).

Of course it’s easy to hack this up if your wizard has a good reason to prepare multiple cantrips.
