Here’s another one of my D&D Next playtest hacks.

If anyone has any ideas as to either a) how backgrounds/jobs could be integrated into DW, or b) how these backgrounds could be converted into Playbooks, let me know!

Another homebrew background:

Constable

Originally a mediatory force between citizenry of Darkmoor and the embedded Western troops, a constabulary is employed by each of the four Provinces to keep the peace within their borders. These constables perform a variety of tasks including investigation of minor crimes, patrolling the major roads, and issuance of parking tickets. As a Constable gains experience they can expect assignments with a higher degree of responsibility. Once promoted to officer, a constable gains a level of autonomy, allowing them to freely roam the province, meting out justice as they see fit.

Jurisdiction: You are an officer of a provincial authority in Darkmoor. Upstanding citizens of the same province recognize your authority and influence, and will defer to your command. In cases where there is a clear threat to the province, the population, or Darkmoor itself, you can invoke your status to temporarily deputize civilians and requisition simple equipment, horses and vehicles for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to properties belonging to the authorities in the other three provinces, including the services of officers of lower rank, information, and facilities for research and/or recuperation.

Suggested Skills: Gather rumors, search, sense motive, and spot.

Suggested Equipment: Badge of office, traveler’s clothes, magnifying glass, one week’s worth of alert bulletins, manacles, whistle.

  1. I’d tend to make them replacements for Race, a bit like the Barbarian’s Outsider. Most of them are probably available to every class.

Actually, now I have this idea… each one of these backgrounds gets a racial move available to all classes, and then a compendium class that lets them advance further. Something like:

    Constable (Race Option)

Upstanding citizens recognize your authority and influence, and will defer to your command. In cases where there is a clear threat to the province, the population, or Darkmoor itself, you can invoke your status to temporarily deputize civilians and requisition simple equipment, horses and vehicles for temporary use.

If you are a constable, these moves are available to you as class moves, you can choose from them when you level up:

    Man With No Name

Your reputation as a force of authority proceeds you. Not just citizens will recognize you as a constable, but all intelligent beings. They’ll react accordingly: supporting you to a reasonable degree if they’re upstanding, or acting against you if they’ve got something to hide.

&etc. (If I could figure out how to write the Law & Order gavel sound, I’d totally give them a move named that.)

Actually, I really dig this. If you’re interested in collaborating on a little PDF book using your art with some DW rules for all of these I’d be totally open to working something out.
