What is the better type move for a Sith Battlerager type character (only that he is not Sith but Psionic…)

Psionic Rage#mechanical

When you cry out in fury and unleash your Rage roll+CON

On a 10+ you hold 3  on a 7-9 you hold 2. You can spend hold 1 for 1 to

– Give one of your attacks the forceful tag

– Do +1d4 damage forward

– frighten an enemy you engage for a moment

Psionic Rage#Shapeshifting

When you cry out in fury and unleash your Rage roll+CON

On a 10+ you hold 3  on a 7-9 you hold 2. You can spend hold 1 for 1 to

– Close the distance between you and an enemy in a heartbeat

– Knock an enemies weapon across the room

– Throw your weapon, no matter it’s size, at someone

– Frighten an enemy you engage for a moment

The options on the second move aren’t final, just some ideas to show my problem.

  1. Is there any way to phrase the “weapon throwing” thing so that it implies you will also hit? It’s not “i spend hold and now i can volley”  but “i spend hold and throw my meatcleaver at you”

  2. The second one is much better. Straight mechanical bonuses are boring.

Also: “hit with a thrown weapon” is essentially “spend your hold to deal damage.” Yes, it will leave you without a weapon (unless you have several knives or whatever), but still; I don’t think that’s a good idea. Spend hold to Volley with +Str would probably be better.

edit: also worth pointing out: “when you cry out in fury and unleash your rage” and getting resources now to spend later don’t really make much sense together. It should be a choice move (2 on a 10+, 1 on a 7-9).

  3. The Indomitable setup is good when you can only do it one, hence the “enter battle” trigger, but “cry out” sounds like something you can do a bunch of times (but I dunno what the rage thing is, so). Auto-hit with a thrown weapon is awesome, I dislike frighten though. Let the GM role-play!

  4. Is this trigger more clear?

    Psionic Rage

When you take a moment to channel your Rage into psionic energy  roll+CON

On a 10+ you hold 3  on a 7-9 you hold 2. You can spend hold 1 for 1 to

    – Close the distance between you and an enemy in a heartbeat

    – Knock an enemy’s weapon across the room

    – Hit someone with a thrown weapon, no matter its size.

    – Frighten an enemy you engage for a moment

  5. Yes, that no longer seems incompatible with gaining hold. It still spends hold to deal damage on a move you can spam as much as you want.

  6. As long as youz have weapons and time to channel yes. There probarbly needs to be a line there about loosing hold when you don’t act aggresively and rash.

  7. So, lets say we establish that I’ve got about an hour and then I have to fight a dude. How many times can I roll this move? That’s my only problem with it: it doesn’t demand that anything in the fiction change from before you use to after you use it. You can still be standing there going “grrrrr” only now you have some abstract potential that isn’t really a thing in the fiction. You don’t have to start a fight or turn into an animal, and it’s not like read a sitch/person where you can only use it once each time. Unless of course, it IS like that and you only have a certain reservoir or rage.

  8. Well you are now “psionacly charged” this is a thing for me but not something i have done that much with. You are also now angry, probarbly more angry then just normal angry.

And of course you could sit there all day and do that but this wouldn’t really help you because you still can only hold 3. You don’t get more hold then that.

    Does that help?

  9. If it’s just like shapeshifting that’s fine then, although you could maybe come up with a technical term for it and use that instead, like “when you use rage to charge your psychic aura, roll.” It sounds like there are other ways to charge up psionic stuff, you could just explain the process in another section and not have to say it takes a moment.

  10. Actually, that would be a good way of doing it. “When you channel your rage to charge your psychic aura” becomes the trigger for this, and you can have other moves for other CCs/classes that use other emotions, i.e. “when you channel your fear to charge your psychic aura,” or “when you channel your love to charge your psychic aura,” etc. – each of them with different things that you can spend hold on.

That’s a very psionic way of doing things.

  11. And you can take another move where you get +1 hold if you do something stupid based on the emotion. Be violent (angry) toward someone who totally doesn’t deserve it? Take a blow meant for the one you love? +1 hold!

    (or something)

  12. So maybe something like this:

Psionic energy is inherent to creatures of the Dungeon World. Some train hard to unlock the spark of their mind, some are naturals and twist minds like they are puppets on a string. Most people never uncover their talents but some do. Moments of strong emotions can sometimes be enough to enlighten the mind and allow the fortunate to use these emotions to tap into psionics.

Most become obssesed with these emotions, turning into avatars of Rage or Love or Loyalty. Some heretics say that this is how the gods got their power. Some try to awaken all their emotional potential and travel far and wide to learn and experience new things.

These moves allow you to unlock the power of the mind, as well as of the heart in your Dungeon  World Game.
