So, at tonight’s game, the fighter wanted to take his huge, brutal club and beat down two ‘horde’ creatures at one go.  This seems like a plausible move, but I drew a blank at the table at how to adjudicate it.  And I can’t find any guidance in the rules.  Hack and Slash says “an enemy”, singular.  The Fighter has no Cleave move.  The Harm and Healing section has rules for damage from multiple creatures, but not attacks against multiple creatures.

Is the idea to try to keep horde creatures challenging by limiting how fast they can be cut down, or is there some variation of a standard move I’m not seeing that should just handle it?

  1. p58, under Hack and Slash: “If the action that triggers the move could reasonably hurt multiple targets roll once and apply damage to each target (they each get their armor).”

  2. I thought I read somewhere that you divide damage among the targets… I want to say I read that in the supplemental doc that was written by someone in a forum..

  3. Pulled directly from the latest version of the PDF

“If the action that triggers the move could reasonably hurt multiple targets roll once and apply damage to each target (they each get their armor)”

To me this reads, roll damage dice once , apply the result of that roll to all targets equally, not divide it up. Besides by dividing you could end up with inflicting an amount of damage so small that it is not worth doing and rolling for each target seems cumbersome.

  4. Hm.  I think I’d much prefer to read that as instructions for area-effect attacks (Fireball!), and house-rule melee this way.  Since we’ve been talking about the Fighter not getting to feel that special, let’s give him another option.

    Attacking Multiple Targets

If a character chooses to try to strike multiple targets with one Hack and Slash move, roll damage normally, subtract one per target beyond the first, and distribute as the player chooses.  For instance, when striking at three targets, if the player rolls a 9 for damage, they would subtract 2 for additional targets leaving 7, and could choose to distribute it as 4,3,0 or 3,1,3.  The character is never required to try to strike multiple targets, even if they are available.

    New Fighter 2-5 Advanced Move:

    Whirlwind

When you deal damage to horde enemies, make a mighty blow and strike all within reach.  Roll once normally for damage and deal full damage to all targets.

Phrased as “when you deal damage” so that hopefully it’s clear that it generally triggers on a successful Hack & Slash.
